Great slate including ROSE, FATHERLAND, QUEEN AT SEA, ADAMS APPLE, and LA GRADIVA! Will probably make the trip up for that weekend.

And with that my edition of #TIFF26 comes to a close. Great movie slate from Korean New Wave to Eastern European existentialism. Looking forward to plenty I didn’t catch past week. boxd.it/Xs836

POSSIBLE LOVE - Folks, this flick is going to be major. Loosely connected a chapter of DEKALOG, this masterfully observed tale features my favorite lead performance of 2026. Jeon Do-yeon’s face says everything. A sharp study of desire and how, no matter our class, we’ll always want more. #TIFF26 📽️

MINOTAUR – Andrey Zvyagintsev returns after nine years and transposes his marital-strife tale against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. An austere, icily chilled portrait of how the personal can never be separated from the political. One of the most dread-filled highlights of #TIFF26. 📽️

A family of three shares a meal at a dimly lit wooden dinner table, captured through a glass window reflecting dark trees outside. The scene shows a thoughtful man, a smiling young boy, and a gesturing woman interacting during dinner.

"Enjoy" might be a bit strong for Zyagintsev😅. Basking in Eastern European nihilism is more like it.

POSSIBLE LOVE: You could crassly reduce this to PARASITE without the genre trappings, but Lee Chang-dong’s DEKALOG-inspired journey into the depths of yearning is so much deeper and knottier, building up to a true fight against the tides of misplaced desire. Superb stuff. #TIFF26

JOSEPHINE - The first great film I’ve seen at #TIFF26. Never want to see it again; been an hour since the screening ended & I still can’t shake its raw brutality. Staying entirely within the 8-year-old’s POV makes its portrait of a child failed by every avenue of protection devastatingly powerful. 📽️

Three people stand in a wooden enclosure, including a woman seen from the side holding a young girl who hugs her neck, while a man looks downward with a somber expression.

Wingard and company challenging themselves by making a movie where they have zero interest in the supposed main character. Feels like a sizzle reel of 80s horror/action rather than a movie. How do you mess up NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD with tactical zombies?

What makes Dolly's letter to Eminem so great is that she doesn't just pay him professional compliments. She goes out of her way to tell him something personal: "you are special and people love you." Someone like Eminem gets complimented all the time. How often does someone tell him he's special?

randomly giving out genuine compliments is such an easy way to make the world a little nicer, i'm always surprised more people haven't figured that out and have a ton of respect for those who have

Screenshot of tweet by Eminem. Text of Eminem's post reads:

I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had a an impact on me. She definitely didn't have to take the time to do it. Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense. Rest easy Dolly. And thank you for the kind words.

Attached is an image of a classy and generous letter Dolly Parton sent to Eminem after missing a chance to meet him at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

I wasn't planning to see The Odyssey because I was so mad about how egregiously Nolan explored similar themes in Oppenheimer, but my best friend (a Classics prof) encouraged me to see it, and I'm so glad she did. I loved it, and I finally realized why I hated Opp so much, so I wrote about both:
