Am digging the critical pile-on on "Digger," a folly I dug almost because of its excesses rather than in spite of them. Think Roy Andersson directing the Firesign Theatre. Makes "Dr. Strangelove" look like a corporate retreat. A movie everyone will love to hate and a few will hate to love. Review TK
Tom Cruise -- yes, Tom Cruise -- as a vile old man.

Thoughts and Preyers: “Primetime” v “Predators”
The new Robert Pattinson drama has great performances and a queasy moral compass. Plus: New films on demand and a couple of classic recommendations.

Poem I forgot I wrote a while back.

Koan Curriculum

The aisles of this supermarket are stacked with
10,000 things that make no sense.
Hair dye for the heart.
A scrub brush for music.
Spices to sprinkle over street corners
and small children.
A toilet plunger made of stone.
I read the label for each
before I go on to the next
and the cashier is so very far away,
my cart so full.
The express lane is closed,
says the stock boy, kneeling,
but you don’t have to worry.
Your money’s no good here.

Choosing a 3 hr 15 min movie for my first TIFF screening would normally be a risky move, but it's Ryûsuke Hamaguchi and it's glorious. ALL OF A SUDDEN: A film of friendship, kindness, language and ideas with a big honking TED talk in the middle that explains everything. Subtle notes of Rivette, too.

Some stars are sui generis, literally inimitable. They create their own space in the culture, their own genre of human. And when they're gone, no one fills their shoes. There's no "next" Fred Astaire or Mae West or Audrey Hepburn. There will be no "next" Dolly Parton. Even the idea is absurd.

Lucky me, I got to review the A.R.T.'s "Rhinoceros" for @bostonglobe.com. Turturro is great, but what Giamatti does with the Act II transformation scene will go down in theater legend. A scaldingly funny and then just scalding staging that couldn't be more relevant to life in the age of MAGA. Yowza.

John Turturro, Paul Giamatti, Tatiana Maslany shine in A.R.T.’s bone-chillingly prescient ‘Rhinoceros’ - The Boston Globe
By turns funny and horrifying, the A.R.T.'s production of the classic Eugene Ionesco play coheres into a devastating organic whole.

I stand by my belief that if his orders had been to destroy America as a world power of any consequence, this is pretty much what he would have done.
The munitions shortage opens a strategic door for international adversaries like China, North Korea, and Russia.
“It’s impossible for that not to have a significant effect on the decision calculus of Russia and China. They may do something quite deliberate and at the time of their choosing, because keep in mind — we’re going to take years to reconstitute,” Tom Karako, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told The New York Times.
