No cinema trips this weekend as I'm off to Montreal for a bachelor party, but I look forward to catching up with Digger & Resident Evil. So many Fall flicks: The Social Reckoning, Remain, and The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth. Oh, and it's October—Happy Spooky Season to all who celebrate! 🎃

THE WEIGHT – I was excited to see this but felt let down. Occasionally rousing and well choreographed, but it kept reminding me of better films: THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE, THE WAGES OF FEAR, and especially SORCERER. I wanted a lean, mean thriller rather than forced attempts at profundity. 📽️

I’ll never forget seeing this in 2009 at the now-defunct AMC Kennedy Commons 20 and asking the guy at the ticket booth for two tickets to TWO LOVERS. He glanced over, noticed I was going to be seeing it with another gentleman, and then laughed. The ’00s, man. Good motion picture.

Recent acquisitions. The Criterion pop-up shop during TIFF was dangerous. I went a little wild. 📽️🎵
Four Criterion Collection discs: "All About Eve," "Charade," "Little Odessa," and "Hud."Three vinyl records displayed side by side. The left record features a photo of two people standing together on a street. The center record is titled "sixteen stone" by Bush, with text in a stylized font. The right record has a darker cover design with minimal text.

Exiting #TIFF26 on an appropriately disarming note with BUCKING FASTARD - a film that felt like something I hallucinated on Day 11, but also exactly the kind of strange detour I’d expect from Herzog. The Mara sisters were mesmerizing in sync. 📽️

WILD HORSE NINE - Wrestling with my reaction, but I managed to get there largely on the strength of John Malkovich & Sam Rockwell. I remain less convinced by McDonagh transposing his male-friendship preoccupations to the American West against Chile’s 1973 coup. Liked it, with reservations. #TIFF26 📽️

THE DIARY OF A CHAMBERMAID - Damn. I expected Radu Jude to bring his trademark profane, keenly observant humor to this. What I didn’t expect was just how affecting it would be. 126 years later, Mirbeau’s tale of class division feels less like history than an increasingly obscene punchline. #TIFF26 📽️

Any guesses for this year’s TIFF People’s Choice winner? Based on the audience reaction to LA BOLA NEGRA last night, I’d say it’s very much a candidate - and at least a lock for the International People’s Choice Award. #TIFF26 📽️

LA BOLA NEGRA (THE BLACK BALL) - A sweeping, maximalist queer epic that bypassed my critical circuitry and went straight for the heart. Gorgeous, overflowing, emotional filmmaking - the excess is the point & I loved it. The stranger beside me and I stayed behind, gushing about its beauty. #TIFF26 📽️

POSSIBLE LOVE - Folks, this flick is going to be major. Loosely connected a chapter of DEKALOG, this masterfully observed tale features my favorite lead performance of 2026. Jeon Do-yeon’s face says everything. A sharp study of desire and how, no matter our class, we’ll always want more. #TIFF26 📽️

WOMAN UNKNOWN - A rich, layered, exquisitely directed post-WWII thriller about secrets, survival, and gendered punishment. Difficult to revisit but impossible to shake, it lingers through devastating images and thoughtful questions about who society chooses to shame, protect, and forgive. #TIFF26 📽️

SOUMSOUM, THE NIGHT OF THE STARS - One of the great pleasures of international cinema is its transportive quality. I may never visit Chad, but this enchanting film offered me a glimpse of that world, while introducing me to this idea of the mountainous landscapes becoming keepers of souls. #TIFF26 📽️

MINOTAUR – Andrey Zvyagintsev returns after nine years and transposes his marital-strife tale against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. An austere, icily chilled portrait of how the personal can never be separated from the political. One of the most dread-filled highlights of #TIFF26. 📽️

EVERYTIME – Starts out as a gentle family drama reminiscent of AFTERSUN, then becomes something downright Lynchian. Bizarre, unexplainable, utterly hypnotic. Could I pass a test on this? Absolutely not. Was I held in its spell? Absolutely. A movie that’s going to stay in my brain forever. #TIFF26 📽️

LOOK BACK - Hirokazu Kore-eda, cinema’s greatest humanist, cracked my heart open once again. A gentle, lovely gift about friendship, creativity, manga, and the moments that become the memories we carry forever. I’m not a 😢 viewer but Kore-eda knows how to give me an emotional workout. #TIFF26 📽️

HOW WE STAND - Admired the film for its attempt to color outside the lines. Adapted by Marie Clements from her own play, it confronts recent Indigenous history while striving to be genuinely cinematic, especially in its leaps toward magical realism. Mileage will vary, but I admired it. #TIFF26 📽️

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HARLEM - One of the most memorable films of 2026 was… made in 1972? So it is. A miracle of preservation, dropping us into Duke Ellington’s house as Harlem Renaissance luminaries debate, converse & get a little tipsy. My, what conversation. And what a cultural treasure. #TIFF26 📽️

BITTER CHRISTMAS - My most anticipated film of #TIFF26 may not have lived up to my sky-high expectations, but any new Pedro Almodóvar movie is a vibrant, must-see event (even if minor). A fascinating exploration of creativity’s destructive nature and the cost of turning others’ lives into art. 📽️

BUNKER - Florian Zeller’s 1st film was THE FATHER. Then he made THE SON. The Holy Spirit has all but abandoned him in this marriage story about literal bunkers and metaphorical bunkers. And in case we didn’t get the metaphor, the married-in-real-life couple makes sure we do again & again. #TIFF26 📽️

THE DREAMED ADVENTURE - Wish it was titled ONCE UPON A TIME IN BULGARIA. An epic western crime film built around a massive inversion. Think TAKEN but it's the middle-aged man who disappears & a middle-aged woman who initiates the rescue mission. In the most laid-back way. Still simmering. #TIFF26 📽️

LA GRADIVA - One of the great discoveries I’ve had in ~ two decades of attending the fest. A fully in-command debut from Marine Atlan, who brings a cinematographer’s eye to an observed story of teenage desire, uncertainty and self-discovery. Even at 150 mins, I wasn’t ready for it to end. #TIFF26 📽️

JOSEPHINE - The first great film I’ve seen at #TIFF26. Never want to see it again; been an hour since the screening ended & I still can’t shake its raw brutality. Staying entirely within the 8-year-old’s POV makes its portrait of a child failed by every avenue of protection devastatingly powerful. 📽️
