Landed! Just keep it small. You'll make it, but you'll have to deal with some annoying looks from the crew when boarding (I guess it's all part of the performance).

My biggest concern about ECSR Dublin is whether Ryanair will allow me to travel with my A1 poster tube without paying an extra fee. Any recommendations or past experiences you're willing to share?

Is it just the convenience of sharing a native language over lunch? Or is it the administrative burden that makes local language genuinely necessary? Just to name a few. The question is fully genuine. Any insights welcome. Thanks!

I see a growing share of postdoc vacancies in quantitative sociology requiring knowledge of the local language, even when there's no teaching or qualitative work involved. I don't know ahout the reason, but it's not good for internationalization. Especially with AI erasing language barriers.

Pro tip: if you're going to write to a journal editor asking why your manuscript doesn't have a decision yet, it's best to ensure that you haven't declined every review request from that journal for several years. Where are we meant to get reviews (& thus timely outcomes), if not from you??

Do waitresses receive the same occupational prestige as waiters? Using German gendered occupational titles, we find that feminine job titles receive slightly lower prestige than masculine ones, especially among male-domindated occupations. Out now in Social Forces. doi.org/10.1093/sf/s...

These equivalence requirements & associated costs are ridiculous, and put extra burdens on young scholars. Something similar happened with my IT habilitation, for which my experience at a NL graduate school accredited by the Dutch Royal Academy of Science did not count as not approved by IT ministry

Not sure about the purpose of requiring "equivalence" to PhDs from other European countries that have broad common agreements in many areas of education. I've never been asked for that kind of equivalence in Germany or Italy. I believe this should change.

Iván Canzio @ivancanzio.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
Those who earned their PhDs abroad should request "equivalence", pay 110€ and wait some months(!). This adds up to the fact that even application processes for temporary postions have an administrative fee ranging from 20€ to 40€. I spent 70€ just applying for 3 vacancies. Not much but not fair.

In April I applied for 3 vacancies in 2 universities in Spain. I found out I'm excluded from the selection process because my Swiss PhD title is not automatically recognized. This happens in *most* (not all) universities. These closure processes impose a penalty on those who went abroad to study

Also works for mothers ;) There's a twin paper in Sociology (Social Science Research) with Swedish data: doi.org/10.1016/j.ss...
Abstract
Parental separation is associated with a range of negative outcomes for children experiencing it, and there is ongoing scholarly and public interest in whether these associations reflect causal effects of parental separation. We estimate the effect of parental separation on children's educational achievement in Sweden using the proportion of male colleagues at the maternal workplace as an instrumental variable for parental separation. We discuss our instrumental variable approach in the context of the literature on the heterogeneous effects of parental separation. In the empirical analysis, we use population register data on 387,411 Swedish children born between 1990 and 1996 and measure educational achievement through their grade point averages in the final year of compulsory schooling. We find that parental separation does not have a negative effect on educational achievement and that this result is robust across a range of specifications. We argue that our results are informative of the effects of a large share of parental separations, in which parents dissolve relatively well-functioning unions

UDC creates a constant flow or racist referendums with similar rhetoric. During my time in Lausanne I saw many of their campaigns, including some targeting white Europeans, who are not the usual target of racist campaigns. Luckily, these referendums tend to have little success.

My guess is that there's a big firm with many consultants who bought the parent union a few years ago and now even has the right to fine students for getting drunk or arriving late for Christmas dinner, making a huge profit from them. We'll only find out if John Oliver makes a program about it.

Title page and abstractTable comparing conscription policies across 18 European countries, including suspension year, cohort exposure, service rates, conscientious objection, and service duration.
Coefficient plot showing positive associations between having served in the military and later work in armed forces, skill/license-related, and male-dominated occupations.
Difference-in-differences coefficient plot showing modest negative estimates of conscription suspension on men’s work in armed forces, skill/license-related, and male-dominated occupations.

Great to see our scoping review from the ERC-funded TARGET project published! The field has mainly looked at the drivers of discrimination attributions in isolation, and with little attention to between-respondent heterogeneity. We call for multi-dimensional designs and multi-actor comparisons.

Using the few parental measures available, we analysed the influence of parental education (which we could not separate from social class) and parental physical activity as determinants of children’s participation in gender‑(a)typical sports, with somewhat unexpected results.

Usually, both boys and girls practice only sports that are typical for their gender, or one sport that is typical for their gender plus a gender‑neutral sport. The dataset covers a large German sample from 2003 to 2021, still we see that gender segregation in sports has remained quite stable.

Having detailed information on which sports children practice, I classified a large group of sports based on the gender of those who practice them. Here there's a list of those that have consistently remained in one category from 2003 to 2021
Gender-neutral (40-60% of boys)	Tennis
	Badminton
	Swimming
	Climbing

Female-dominated (less than 40% of boys)	Dance
	Ballet
	Gymnastics
	Aerobic
	Acrobatic sports
	Horse sports
	Rollerblading

Male-dominated (more than 60% of boys)	Football
	Basket
	Tabletennis
	Martial arts
	Scouts

It turns out that there's very little quanti research on which sports boys and girls practice, but we know from quali research that kids who practice gender atypical sports tend to experience stigmatization and lack of support Also, sports are a relevant domain of socialization at early ages

During my time in Konstanz I had to work with a unique - but extremely limited - dataset about children's physical activity. Quite a challenge for me because I do employment research and children (usually) don't work. So, I tried to think of sports like I did for occupations 🎾🚴‍♂️💃🏂⚽🏃 (thread)
Abstract:Participation in sports during childhood and adolescence is typically segregated by gender, with girls and boys frequently engaging in different types of sports. This segregation has broad negative consequences, particularly for children who participate in sports that are not predominant within their gender. Qualitative studies indicate that parents play a crucial role by either supporting or hindering their children's engagement in gender-typical and gender-atypical sports; however, little is known about the influence of specific parental attributes. We argue that parental physical activity (PA) exerts a gendered influence on children's participation in gender-(a)typical sports, and that parents with high education promote children's engagement ingender-atypical sports. We test these hypotheses using a large dataset of children and adolescents in Germany (N = 9,224). Overall, we find that parental PA exhibits the expected gendered association: boys are more likely to practise (only) male-dominatedsports when only their father does PA, and girls are more likely to practise (only) female-dominated sports when only their mother does PA. Regarding parental education, we find limited support: boys with highly educated parents are less likely to participate (exclusively) in gender-typical sports, whereas no such pattern is observed for girls. We discuss the broader implications and limitations of our findings
