If Bastien went to sleep, come morning he’d be faced with the cold realization that the man laying beside him was leaving. That tomorrow would be the last time he’d wake beside him. And how long had it taken them to get to this point? Too long, Bastien figured, since the time they did have now felt so short in comparison.

I swear I spy shades of pink before the moment is over, before this magic of their own comes to an end, and in Cirah's place sits Juniper, just as she had been this morning.

With the revitalization of the gothic genre, I often wish more people remembered that the genre traditionally builds heavily on suspense. To a certain extent, it should be predictable and the characters should make awful decisions. And that's not actually bad writing, but an homage to the genre.
