I do not come home. I nestle into a story my mother tells me, of the banyan that could restore life and its keeper Cuội who instructed his wife to water it in his absence, but suffered when the wife forgot and instead urinated on the tree's roots in a panic, and the banyan grew grew grew wildly, bursting
until Cuội took an axe to tame its bestial branches, and it ascended, floating until the banyan settled on the moon.

What I wish I saw more of in the reading queue: more of the above!

Bio: Hien Nguyen (she/her) is a speculative fiction writer from the Midwest whose work has been nominated for the Pushcart, Best of the Net, and Best Small Fictions. She writes about Vietnamese monsters and mythology and calls Georgia home. Twin Tides is Hien’s debut young adult novel.

My dad often makes up “facts” based on his anecdotal assessment of things (one being deer will someday go to extinct because they get hit by too many cars). However, he once said: “Americans didn’t like Jimmy Carter as a president because Americans love war” and I’ve thought about it a lot recently.

🔔in AANHPI month w my debut Twin Tides (out Dec 9) my partner (biased but a prof of asian am lit) told me this felt like an asian american novel, which was my intention. as much as it’s about teen hijinks, it’s also about legacy of war & diaspora. available for preörder & to request on Edelweiss!

Book held without cover visible in front of plants. Text reads: a book with a ghost pov, long lost twins, intergenerational rage, an evil nepo baby, honest reflections on mental health disorders, lyrical prose

Twin tides book cover helps in front of plants. Dark blue background with outline of house and water. A long haired ghost emerges from the water and two girls stand back to back, one crying and the other screaming
