It rly is true what ppl say about ”just don’t stop” when it comes to publishing, but I also think there’s room for another perspective that’s equally true: Go where the energy is. Don’t just “keep going,” but consider when to slow down, take a left, or park by the curb for half an hour.

I should be saying something wild & amazing right now, and dig into my statistics for the decade(+) I've been at this, but no words can really capture this. Forever grateful for everybody who pushed me this far, and for those who saw what I wanted to do, and was trying to do, and always will do. ❤️

I JUST discovered a way of stylistically including an element in my story that I wanted to include from the very start, but considered too far-fetched, and so I discarded it. But now that I've drafted half of the book, I can see a way of including it---and THIS feeling is what writing is all about!🔥

I really need to get back into writing and submitting short stories more regularly again. I think I miss it, but it's hard to squeeze in among everything else these days.

About to finally hit 30k on what is probably the hardest thing I've written in some years now. I don't know what made that stretch from 20k to 30k so hard, especially when I already had an outline, but it turns out it's rather difficult to juggle 2 POVs with a 700 year interval in between. Yay. 🫠

My latest flex as a writer? I've managed to use "pigeon-livered" in two books where it makes total sense and doesn't feel out of place, and I think this needs to become my thing.

If you ask me, the best feedback and beta-ing is the kind that feels actionable. And giving truly actionable feedback is actually a lot harder than what a lot of people think. Imo, actionable feedback is the secret step up from constructive criticism.

I love working with braided narratives across dual timelines (and it has definitely become a thing of mine by now), but this also means double the historical research and double the outlining for one single book, and that was maybe not something I'd planned on. Not the smartest move, maybe.

Nearly every single Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale is a low-key horror story, but I don't see enough people talking about "The Fir Tree"/"Grantræet". That story has haunted me since childhood, istg, more formative for me than any of his other stories. I still think about it randomly as an adult.

In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.

👀Fiction Highlight👀 ICYMI, the short story "Fish Upon A Star" by @arfrederiksen.bsky.social is now free to read! The night sky is heavy with wishes—some we hope come true and some we'd rather forget—can the starfisher find yours? Story: buff.ly/6EZM4Bi Issue: buff.ly/sTRxEtv
Image shows Saleha Chowdhury's art of a dark figure over a red background, their organs made up of strange animals. Superimposed on the image is an excerpt from issue twenty of Haven Spec Magazine, published July 2025.

Author: A. R. Frederiksen.
Title: Fish Upon A Star.

Excerpt:

Before he died, my dad fished stars for a living. Sucked them straight out of the sky with a glorified mechanical fishing rod. Of all the possessions that I inherited, the starfisher was dad's truest legacy. I picked up where he left off, expanding on his star smuggling business as he would've wanted. All I had to do was find the people who'd wished on stars when they were children and offer them one of two options: pay me to keep their star in the sky or pay me to fish it free.
