LRT: What a harrowing read. When I first became interested in the quest to solve the Navier-Stokes equations c. 2009 or so, never in a million years did I dream that the eventual doing of it would be so underwhelming and tainted by corporate stonewalling and LLM slime. I'm so damn disappointed.

This is worth a read because it eviscerates the narration of "AI solved complex mathematical problems, we can now retire mathematicians" that's currently being pushed by the AI companies. (and in general please remain sceptical of any claims to independent thinking or intent by LLMs)

We switched our 2yo's Hatch to rainbow shifting colours instead of just red recently, and this morning he pointed to it and said "Blue turning green. It bending colours like optical physics." Just in case you ever wondered if those "[Science] for Babies" books worked....

I found out about Dolly Parton's passing while at Walmart with my family & w/in thirty seconds, I spotted her face smiling at me from a frozen dessert. Serendipity or ubiquity, I'm not sure, but I do know that she was one of the people in this world who was good to her bones. Rest in peace, Dolly.

I went into labour w/ my daughter amidst a tropical storm. We'd lost power for an extended duration & the stress of the storm and the food that was going to spoil moved things along. Today, I discovered the "power's back on!" text from the energy company came at exactly the minute she was born.

It’s a beautiful night to die.

From the balcony, Fay Soon stares down at the celebration: the silken gowns, the crystal chalices, the laughter resounding like shattered glass. It’s the end of semester which means yet another overpriced soirée for Chang’E National University’s elite. After seven years here, the scene is hardly unfamiliar. She studies the expanse of the university gardens.

There’s a cyclical nature to it. Young and eager minds unfurling: the undergraduates, loquacious in their attempts to impress one another, each conversation, each gesture, carefully selected like the finest blossoms in a greenhouse.

There are those on the other end of the cycle too. Senescence. The doctoral candidates wilting in the shadows. Hoping for their ideas to be transfigured by wind or water or even the sorghum wine they’re cradling in their hands.

But no matter how many times Fay experiences it, she doesn’t think she’ll ever get used to the spectacle.

No one in the outer circle speaks like that, not in those sprawling, unmanicured streets. It’s opulent; it’s hypnotizing. It’s—

—a complete and utter waste of funds.
