Definitely discovery. I start with characters who come fully formed and a spark of a scenario, & just start writing a scene to tell me more about them. I’m hardly in the shape to fight anything,” he protested. “I can barely walk without help!”
“That’s fine, you won’t need to,” Emeric said, gesturing for him to come again. Lyric sighed and walked toward the great gaping hole.
When he stepped through, he expected to appear inside of the sorcerer’s tower. Instead, he found himself inside Andres’ living room.
Andres himself was naked, a towel wrapped around his waist and a hand in his damp hair. He startled when Emeric and Lyric suddenly appeared, throwing an accusatory glare at Lyric.
“He brought me!” Lyric said quickly. “I didn’t ask to come, I swear. Tell him, Emeric!”

I decided to go with my childhood all-time, the first volume of the Chronicles of Chrestomanci by Diana Wynne Jones.
