6 October 1889. Moulin Rouge opened in Paris at the bottom of a hill in the Montmartre neighborhood. It put on cabaret entertainment focused on its female dancers who popularised the modern Can-Can dance. It remains a popular Paris tourist attraction.

These two 1st-2nd c. CE Roman marble theatrical masks represent comedy and Melpomene, muse of tragic theater. They were discovered in the peristyle of a ruined Roman villa of La Estación in Antequera, Spain. Note the little face of the actor behind the large open mouth of the comedy mask! 😆 🏺 📸 me
Marble mask of the personification of comedic theater. It’s somewhat grotesque, the mouth opening in a large open and wide grin, with bugged-out eyes and deep laugh lines around the eyes and forehead. He has a pompadour hairstyle, taller than the face itself, and it falls to the level of the mask’s chin, with incised wavy lines. A small frowning face of an actor with a snub nose can be seen inside the large mouth.

Centro de Interpretación del Teatro Romano, Málaga, SpainMarble mask representing the personification of tragic theater. It’s the face of a woman, specifically Melpomene, muse of tragic theater, her eyes open wide and her mouth opening in a horrified scream. She has a two-tiered wig of wavy or ringleted hair with a center part.

October 5: Death
a tiny section of a much larger millerite banner that is filled with imagery and text from the book of revelation. this section has an image of a skeleton riding a pale horse holding a spear above its head. the text reads: I looked, and behold a
pale horse: and
his name that
sat on him
was Death,
and Hell
followed
with him.
And power
was given
unto them
over the fourth part
of the earth, to kill
with sword, and with
hunger, and with death,
and with the
beasts of
the earth.

Ánima Sola (Lonely Soul). Popular color print (chromolithograph), Latin America, 20th century.⁣
For 400 years, people have been asking this woman to bring back lovers who've left.⁣
⁣
Her name is Ánima Sola, the Lonely Soul..⁣
⁣
In Catholic belief, Purgatory is where souls not yet ready for heaven are purified, and the prayers of the living shorten that wait. The Lonely Soul, in turn, is the most forsaken soul in Purgatory, the one with no one left to pray for her.⁣
⁣
Those who remembered her would also ask her for something.⁣
⁣
The 17th-century files of the Mexican Inquisition tell us what they asked for. In 1617, Catalina de León, a woman from Seville, appeared before the Inquisition in Mexico City and described how she summoned Garci Pérez, the man she wanted to marry. Every morning, at her window facing the street, she would say three Hail Marys and then call out: "Soul, soul, soul, bring me Garci Pérez! Now, now, now! Until he comes to see me, let him neither sleep nor eat nor know a moment's rest". The window wasn't chosen at random: people believed that once the prayer was said, the man being called would come walking up the street. Garci Pérez didn't show up.⁣
