The modern image of Mokele-mbembe as a long-necked dinosaur owes a great deal to Western cryptozoology. Local traditions are more complicated than the familiar "living brontosaurus" image suggests. Sometimes the monster changes shape when outsiders start telling the story. #WyrdWednesday

In 1842 the Eng. word dinosaur, from the Gk. deinos ‘fearsome’+ sauros ‘lizard', was invented by palaeontologist Richard Owen. Intended to describe Victorian discoveries of fossil reptiles, the word came to include every beast once identified as 'dragon'. The association continues... #WyrdWednesday

Cadborosaurus is a sea serpent with a horse-like head reported around Vancouver Island, BC - most famously at Cadboro Bay, Victoria. Various people have claimed that various carcasses that have washed ashore are Cadborosaurus; they usually turn out to be whales or sharks. #WyrdWednesday

New Zealand's tuatara looks like a lizard but belongs to a different reptile lineage, Rhynchocephalia. Its relatives flourished alongside dinosaurs. Today, the tuatara is the sole surviving representative of that ancient order. One very old branch of the family tree remains. #WyrdWednesday

The snoligoster is a fearsome critter of American tall tales that dwells in the swamps of the American south, especially around Lake Okeechobee. It resembles a legless furry alligator with a back spike and a propellor tail. Victims are stored on the spike until the monster is hungry. #WyrdWednesday

In 1938, a living coelacanth was hauled from the sea off South Africa. The group had been known from fossils and was thought to have vanished around the end of the Cretaceous. Then one arrived at a fish market, proving "known only from fossils" isn't always the end. #WyrdWednesday

Modern historians have suggested that dragons were proven to premodern populations by none other than unearthed fossilized dinosaur bones. Given how close modern dragons look to these bones it is entirely possible, though dragon truthers would very much disagree. #WyrdWednesday

Dr. Perry Sperber, dermatologist and author of Sex and the Dinosaur, opened Bongoland in 1952 in Port Orange, Florida. The theme park featured four "prehistoric monsters." The park closed five years later due to lack of public interest, but its ruins are still visible today. #WyrdWednesday

It was speculated in the 17th century that this newly discovered Middle Jurassic fossil, likely from a Megalosaurus, might belong to a Roman war elephant or a biblical giant. In 1763, naturalist Richard Brookes noted the obvious & named the fossil 'Scrotum humanum' #WyrdWednesday

Physician Richard Brookes had his 'A System of Natural History', 6 vols. published in 1763 and was a prolific writer and translator. In the 1990s Brookes' description was officially rejected 🎨 The 17th century b&w illustration is thought to be of a Megalosaurus femur but, for now, info remains inconclusive until new discoveries and interpretations are made.

The Great Pustaha is a large Batak magic book from North Sumatra. Written by nine generations of datu/priest, it contains spells and potions to destroy villages, kill enemies, inspire love, and heal. The cover has a carving of Naga Padoha, a giant primordial serpent of the underworld. #WyrdWednesday

Venezuela's Mount Roraima rises behind enormous cliffs, its summit isolated from the surrounding landscape. Its geography helped inspire lost-world associations. If Earth were hiding a surviving dinosaur anywhere, a giant cloud-covered tabletop mountain certainly looks the part. #WyrdWednesday
