Silver Springs, 1963: Model Maxine Gillette from Leesburg poses in a Jantzen swimsuit on the park’s azalea-covered rock garden waterfall.

The photo was prominently featured on 1960s postcards promoting the (then) 100-acre park near Ocala.

Today, the nearly 5,000-acre @SilverSpringsStatePark still features a rock garden in addition to other new and historic gardens, including the camellia garden, the Osceola garden, the reflection garden and the wildflower garden.

This photo was published by Silver Springs (and Weeki Wachee Springs) photographer Bruce Mozert’s “Mozert Studio and Camera Shop.” While the State Archives of Florida does preserve Mozert’s photographic collection, the photo is part of the Department of Commerce collection, which can be explained by Mozert’s frequent work with the agency.

In these color photos for Life magazine, you can see that Creature from the Black Lagoon's Julie Adams had a strong red tint to her hair at one point in her career. When author Lydia Lane commented to Julie that she preferred Julie's natural brown hair color, Julie replied:

“Wasn’t that red hair awful? That was the studio’s idea but it was so wrong for me. But when you’re under contract, you don’t argue. I feel no good comes from destroying a person’s basic individuality.”

In fact, it was the movie studio that made her start using the stage name "Julia" instead of her birth name, Betty May Adams. She didn't like the name Julia, so she persuaded the studio to let her modify it. She explained, "The studio picked Julia, but I never have felt comfortable with it. I just like the name Julie better, and the studio gave me permission to make the change."

I grew up in a simpler time. I drank from a garden hose. I rode home on a stingray bike when the street lights came on to find my mother washing down Valium with Boone's Farm, Strawberry Hill and dad on his 3rd martini calling Walter Cronkite a pinko commie bastard for questioning the Vietnam War.

New reports reveal Meta has been classifying gigantic data centers as "pilot models" in order to secure a tax credit from the 1980s. The loophole has allowed Meta to avoid paying nearly $4,000,000,000 in taxes last year alone.

Olga 'the Headless Girl' was a sideshow illusion act, not a real person without a head, using staging to create the effect for audiences in early 20th-century freak shows.

The performer portraying Olga would wear a mask (sometimes described as a crown) of mirrors that reflected an interior series of wires. The illusion was very convincing and remained popular in sideshows for decades, debuting in the United States in 1937 and the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Other names like Tina and Mademoiselle Yvette were also used (instead of Olga).

The story that usually accompanied these acts involves a young woman who had tragically lost her head during a horrifying accident, but through the marvels of science and a talented doctor was able to be kept alive despite the loss of her head.

Laraine Day, production still from The Locket (John Brahm, 1946). It's a film noir that's also a psychiatric study of a troubled woman. Hollywood went big for psychiatry in the Forties (Spellbound, Possessed, Whirlpool, The Snake Pit, et al).
