Brian Beutler gets at a really important point here about how the consultant class keeps the Democratic party in thrall to bad research methodologies. How are consultants' narrow empirical claims about voter sentiment ever interpreted as positive warrants for a particular strategy? It's asinine.
There's a lot more, but this gets at it.
Democratic politics has become a p.r. machine that tests messages and ads (siphoning a lot of money along the way) then targets them at what it believes to be the population of persuadable voters. They waltz into campaigns, and present strategy memos-replete with fancy-looking analytics—to candidates and campaign staffers who may not have tons of experience running high-profile campaigns for federal office. As one of Traister's sources notes, they can be
"very convincing," particularly when clients are more or less innumerate, or have put little thought into what politics is. How did people do it before modern analytics? How do ideas circulate among people? How do people come to like and trust figures they only know from the hustings?

Just inject this into my veins: Beutler presents a succinct and cogent overview of the consultant-industrial complex that's stifling Democratic politics. Their meddlesome, proven-loser horseshit is the single largest source of my anxiety and despair at the moment.

I admit, all this definitional foofaraw about AI is mind boggling. What is actually at stake with these declarations of what qualifies as intelligence or consciousness, and what merits such strident claims here? To be sure, I'm stupid enough to know that this terrain has been well covered already.

In fashioning their strategic advice, do Dem consultants' models ever price in this kind of reaction? Is there ever an evaluation—quantified or not—of downstream effects like voter turnoff, intracoalitional conflict, damage to the party brand, consequences for fundraising, etc.?

Moxon is brilliant here. Consciously or not, he's advancing a very productive understanding of politics as rhetoric. Today the word rhetoric is usually meant pejoratively as mere verbal ornamentation or bs. But behind the word lies a 2,500 year-old discipline dedicated to the art of persuasion.

Talarico's trans stance is infuriating not simply because it's wrong on the merits, but because it's the very brand of losing, consultant-brained shit that delivered us to this moment. How many times have centrists told us if we compromise, the right will only stick it in a little (they promise!)?

sharing again for the weekend crowd. the humanities aren't in crisis, they're under attack -- because they're dangerous to people in power, because they ask their students to imagine possible worlds.
from the article: "Our tendency to see religion as a matter of personal, interiorized belief has led us to view its study as intellectually niche—or, to put it in neoliberal corporate speak—as a “low-skill” distraction. This is true of how we view the Humanities in general, of course—that, as Lauren Horn Griffin has so well explained, they’re seen as little more than “personal enrichment.” But that, she continues, is a right-wing act of controlling unruly ideas, of pushing to the margins disciplines that ask difficult questions of “invisible” power structures—say they’re irrelevant, deny them resources, call them “unprofitable,” make them disappear. But faculty, especially but not exclusively in Religion and other Humanities disciplines, often work directly against these forces. Because the discipline of Religion is attuned to issues of (presumed) interiority as well as actions in the public sphere, it’s these faculty who are some of the best situated to ask uncomfortable questions of those in power—be they federal policymakers or university administrators.

At (regional) public universities like ours, this means highlighting a population that is quite different by class, race, gender, and sexuality than found at, for example, the Ivies. Humanities education, including Religious Studies, helps inure students to authoritarian thinking. At their best, the Humanities are attentive to the frictions that create lived experiences—particularly those that are oftentimes marginalized. The Humanities explain how things have been different, could have been different, could be different now, and may be different in the future. They are about possible worlds."
