our laziness is what allows us as humans to say no, and this helps us push back against complexity @bcantrill.bsky.social #monktoberfest
A slide that says:

The virtue of laziness
• Our need to comprehend and compose systems drives us towards developing simple, powerful abstractions
• This is our drive to cognitive efficiency in a system - what Larry Wall famously called the programmer virtue of laziness
• LLMs lack the virtue of laziness - they are biased to the complex
• Moreover, their limited context makes them tautologically emergent..

literally me last week trying to define "simplier" in the context of complexity last week for a specific project @bcantrill.bsky.social in his talk today at #monktoberfest
Photo of a speaker presenting to a seated audience in a bright room. The projected slide, titled "Abstraction and complexity," shows a two-axis chart. The vertical axis runs from "Engineered" (top) to "Emergent" (bottom), and the horizontal axis from "Complex" (left) to "Simple" (right). The quadrants are labeled Constructed, Revolutionary, Accreted, and Rebellious, with "Revolutionary" highlighted in bold. A citation beneath reads "The Complexity of Simplicity (TalosCon 2025)." The speaker, a man in a black t-shirt holding a microphone, gestures toward the slide. A live-captions screen is visible at right.

Some one captured this slide by the developer on rocket league:
Chart with c languages vs Clojure

Statically Typed
Imperative
Classes
Mutable
Code as Syntax
Edit-Compile-Run
Dynamically Typed
Functional
Data
Immutable
Code as Data
Interactive

All these attributes are maxed out for clojure.

Went to a talk by @brjavaman.bsky.social last night. AI is for things you don’t want to do. The big enemy is “cognitive surrender” where you just give up thinking about the problems and accept whatever the AI does. What a great discussion about the future and managing one’s career.

The danger of AI advancement is not some mega brain taking over the world and annihilating us, it's putting vast hacking farms in the form of LLMs in the hands of idiots to trash infrastructure, banks, and public systems. Someone still needs to put it in motion.

We functionally pay violent drivers over $1 trillion per year in subsidies so they can kill and horrifically maim millions of Americans per year. That's the medical/loss of life/disability cost *paid by victims and society* for letting drivers drive violently. All so they can have cheap insurance.

#ResistanceRoots Margaret “Mardy” Murie was born on this day in 1902 in Seattle. Known as the Grandmother of the Conservation Movement, she dedicated her life to protecting America’s wilderness, playing a key role in passing landmark environmental laws and establishing protected areas in Alaska. /1
Mardy Murie at her home near the Grand Tetons, 1953. Murie’s journey to becoming a conservation icon began in the gold rush settlements of frontier Alaska. Her path was shaped by a childhood on the edge of the wilderness and a chance meeting with a young field biologist. By trading a comfortable life with running water for a tent on the tundra, she transformed into a formidable naturalist and a leading voice for conservation legislation. Her legacy is physically stamped onto the U.S. map: millions of acres of protected wilderness that remain untamed because she chose to speak up for them.
