Many congratulations to Anne Carson for the well-deserved Nobel Prize! This is also great news for Translation, Classics, Poetry, the breaking of generic and disciplinary boundaries, and the fact that you don't have to fit a pre-existing mould to have a brilliant, successful career.

Actually, AI output is to human work as a bland who-knows-what's-in-it burger is to delicious spicy Creole food.

The Muse ads I've seen promise that Muse will "take things off my hands" so that I can save time. For example, it can save me time by turning my profile photo into a crayon drawing. Really important stuff that will help me with my many responsibilities.

According to MIT News, Margaret Hamilton died at the age of 90. "A profoundly influential computer scientist best known for leading the software engineering team at MIT’s Instrumentation Lab during NASA’s Apollo program". This famous photo 🔽 inspired the For All Mankind character Margo Madison.
Margaret Hamilton, but the famous 1969 photo that inspired the For All Mankind character Margo Madison is in the quoted post.

Very cute* that Big Tech's attack on mathematics comes at the same time when women are starting to win Fields Medals on a regular basis. * not cute at all.

Surprising to find this intuition in myself (I never would have predicted I thought this), but the major discovery of the AI era for me is there's a huge group of things (art, scholarship, etc) that I literally only care about if a human being makes it

again, really hope working mathematicians put the pieces together and realize the fundamental threat from ai companies has little to do with transforming practices or modes of mentorship. they want a death grip on funding and employment in the discipline. it's what they want with everything

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

It feels like journals are only a filter for baseline quality, there really is a niche out there for people to personally curate reading lists for others. There is a cottage industry for this in other content like movies, so it would be cool for an academic to get paid to specialize in this way

This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

If you use AI to do your research, you really cannot complain when reviewers use AI to review your papers, imo. The processes you use to expedite your workflow create more work for the rest of us, who are under the same constraints to maximize our own output. Plus, peer review is invisible labor.

How do y'all feel about refereeing AI-assisted papers? I understand the need to check for correctness. I also have a lot of trouble seeing why I should spend my limited human time working with the authors to improve the paper, the way I would if it were entirely human work.

I'm a grown-up 5'3" woman and many of these abominations have hoods higher than that. This has to stop. (Plus, damage to roads, taking up 2 or 3 parking spaces instead of 1, and so on.)

Because blackboards in math classrooms are not made for 5'3" women. (I'm fine with not using the entire height of the board. The problem is pulling it down after it's been pushed all the way up.)

And if math AI wants to make further progress beyond earlier AI output, then that's what it will have to feed on. And that's when we will likely be in hallucination territory, with AI's high speed and large volume output getting in their own way.

Izabella Laba 🇨🇦 @ijlaba.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
So what happens when math AI starts feeding on other math AI writings? That are extremely difficult to decipher even for experts and make no sense to someone without knowledge of context? What's a very common reason for errors and mistakes in published literature? Yeah.

Izabella Laba 🇨🇦 @ijlaba.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
There's at least one inflection point coming up. Companies are already looking for old paper books to scan and feed to AI b/c they want their AI to be trained on human writing. Not on the AI slop that's been flooding the internet in the last couple of years. (Recent story about Amazon iirc.)
