This is quite cool. My university is the first organisation in the world to force Microsoft to allow us to turn off copilot summaries in Word 365, after a backlash against it from staff (including, very vocally, me). That cannot have been easy for our heroic IT people so hats very much off to them!

If you use AI to do your research, you really cannot complain when reviewers use AI to review your papers, imo. The processes you use to expedite your workflow create more work for the rest of us, who are under the same constraints to maximize our own output. Plus, peer review is invisible labor.

How do y'all feel about refereeing AI-assisted papers? I understand the need to check for correctness. I also have a lot of trouble seeing why I should spend my limited human time working with the authors to improve the paper, the way I would if it were entirely human work.

As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.

When I started teaching calculus in the mid-1990s, it was (supposedly) very important for my students to learn to use TI-83 calculators. And: my TI-83 still works! I still use it, for basic stuff but nonetheless. That's more than I can say of so much of the more recent tech.
