In beautiful southwestern Michigan, a person is judged righteous if they can walk barefoot to the end of the south pier at Saugatuck Harbor and back and remain untouched by guano

This is soul nourishing. The pivot from impact driver use while prone and upside down (which is hard), to an amused "OMG the kitten just fell out like the skid plate was a trap door!" to gentle, calming/caring/paternal concern.. "It's OK little buddy" is just lovely. Followed on Insta.

Finnish nature photographer Lassi Rautiainen followed a female grey wolf (Canis lupus) & a male brown bear (Ursos arctos) for 10 days. They played together, shared meals, napped together. Both were young adults. They appeared to be... friends? (📷: Lassi Rautiainen, www.wildfinland.org)
A brown bear and a grey wolf on a green grassy plain, both looking in the same direction, with strange wispy trees out of focus and concealed in fog in the distance. The suggestion is of a land of magic where bears and wolves are friends.

Published estimates of AI energy use per prompt (~0.3 watt-hours) appear reassuring small. But they are increasingly disconnected from how we actually use AI. Modern agentic tools use around 600 times more energy per prompt, as I discuss in my latest over at The Climate Brink www.theclimatebrink....

I have a LR Kia EV6 and a warm battery really does hit the mid 200s during the 0-50 percent range. (It's a joy) A further confounding point is that the larger pack is slightly heavier and thus your average range per kWh is lower.

Ian @iansmcleod.bsky.social · 23/07/2026
OK. Up front, I completely agree with your conclusion. There is extremely limited additional utility in the "Large" versus "Medium" range configuration. Having said that, in many platforms, including yours, the larger pack does charge faster. The practical difference over a long day is small.
Examples where the pattern holds (smaller pack → lower DC peak):

Hyundai Ioniq 5: 58–63 kWh Standard Range tops out around 175–200 kW, while the 77–84 kWh Long Range peaks around 230–235 kW (independent testing has clocked it as high as 260 kW).
Recharged + 2
Tesla Model 3: the LFP Standard/RWD pack (~60–64 kWh) is capped at 170 kW, while the NMC Long Range pack (~82–85 kWh) goes up to 250 kW.
CoPilot
CoPilot
VW ID.4: the 62 kWh pack peaks at 140 kW, the 82 kWh pack at 175 kW.
Volkswagen of Des Moines
Volkswagen of Des Moines
Polestar 2: in the pre-2024 lineup the smaller pack topped out around 135–155 kW while the larger pack reached up to 205 kW (180 kW for the Standard Range version) after the 2024 refresh.

Napkin math on shared session link shows 6 hours of wall time. It would be _very_ interesting to contemplate what lives inside that chain of thought output, sub-agent breakdowns, etc. Is anyone thinking about, talking about or actually doing this for these "insanely long" deep reasoning tasks?

My understanding is that newer machines need far less helium, and that it's now rare to simply vent it outside of an emergency. Too valuable.

How much of this is just unavoidable if you only have weights versus inference implementation details? Right now I can run Gemma on identical MB Pro hardware under Asahi/Vulkan and on MacOS. The MacOS runs are faster because the execution is Metal-native, whereas Vulkan is a compromise.

These are all single head with their own outdoor unit. I had absorbed a "multi-splits are frequently inefficient due to high minimum output" wisdom from Green Building Advisor when planning this out. They've worked well. The cooling, in particular, is incredibly comfortable _and_ efficient.
