This year I returned to this Black, modernist enclave in Chatham to write about the late Jolyn Robichaux. After the death of her husband, she took over Baldwin Ice Cream, transforming that venerable, small operation into a major corporation, all the while keeping her community centered.

Just a little twirly treat for the weekend, 5751 N. Campbell (Adolph Proskauer, 1926-27)
Color photo of a fancy 1920s two-flat in mottled light, with recessed entrance section on left. Facade is tan brick with stone or similar trim on parapet, minimally around windows and in a big way around front entrance, which features skinny columns with diagonal fluting, two rows of smooth leaves (not acanthus) below volutes on each capital, then boxes with shield design, a skimpy cornice, and obelisk finials. Festooned shield in brick between shield boxes, S-curls above front door, painted red with two little windows featuring diamond panes. (Phew!) Same curls above three ground-floor windows on main bay. Matching windows above have plain lunettes. Parapet is swan's neck pediment, h/t @ladytophamcatt.bsky.social for terminology. Window above entrance has diamond panes and lunette, with red clay tiles on roof section.

Highlights from @ladytophamcatt.bsky.social's rainy, rollicking, erudite tour of Morgan Park
Color photo of the Gothic Revival entrance to an apartment building. In pale green terra cotta, a Tudor or similar arch, with stylized flowers on the soffit. Shields and vegetation in the arch's spandrels. A mini-tower on each side of surround, with tall pointed finials. In between finials a pattern of flowers-in-diamonds, each raising from the tip of a wave (not Vitruvian). In the middle, among cusped quatrefoil patterns, the street number: 11053-55. Rest of building is in peach terra cotta, with a little pink brick visible.Color photo of a section of a three-story, with raised basement, Tudor Revival courtyard apartment building in tan brick. It's awesome. Castle tower on top left and half-timbered (stone on pale brick) bay on top right, with crenelated parapet in between. Rough light stone accents, most prevalently in vein on corner of slightly forward section middle-left. Northern catalpa kicking ass in rain on right.Color photo of a Mission but also a bit Art Nouveau entrance to a white stucco apartment building. Door surround, in same stucco, has buttress-like piers on each with an adorbs statue niche. Slim top curved. Door, newer, has a window with a teardrop shape. It's summer, so there's vegetation in foreground and a maple tree blocking a little of the view from the top.Color photo of a red stucco mansion, with many parts. One bay features pretty woodwork in window surrounds, painted gold and red, most prominently a triple arched window under a cornice. It is raining heavily, with a bunch of umbrellas in the foreground.

🚨Important vegetation-in-receptacle terminology and precedents unlocked🚨 From Philippa Lewis & Gillian Darley's Dictionary of Ornament (1986)
Entry from a book for "basket of fruit and flowers" or "corbeil." Flowers and plant forms were an important part of 17th century European ornament. Baskets of flowers (or fruit) combined well with luxuriant *festoons of the period as an applied ornament, e.g. on wall panels, or as a free-standing form, e.g. carved in stone on gate piers. Newel posts carved in the form of fruit and flower baskets appear in Carolean houses such as Thorpe Hall, Northamptonshire, and Tyttenhanger, Hertfordshire -- a feature typical of the work of virtuoso carvers of the period such a Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721) and his contemporary Edward Pearce. Schemes [rest of entry not in pic]

At the bottom of the page are photos of baskets with vegetation, one a newel post bursting with stuff, the other a metal engraving of two angels holding a basket of vegetation.

Dang, the eyes on this green man. 5612 W. Fulton, part of the former Austin Manor Hotel & Apartments (Kocher & Larson, 1923).
Terra cotta relief of a green man head in white speckled terra cotta, with leaves for hair and flap-like extrusions coming down from his cheeks. Grein Funeral Directors, 2114 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago. Built in 1931. Their website says the architect was "G. Gaul" of Hermann J. Gaul & Son, but I can't find G. Gaul mentioned anywhere else. Also, this building is not on Chicago's Historic Resources Survey.
Art Deco funeral home constructed of smooth light gray limestone. The facade is symmetrical (almost), with the main entrance in the center and another door at the far left. Detail on the Patio Theater, 6000-6012 Irving Park Rd., Chicago. Rudolph Wolff was the architect.
A riot of cream and brown terra cotta covers the facade of the Patio Theater in Chicago. This photo shows one corner of the building. The parapet wall has a brown terra cotta background that is absolutely plastered with decoration, including cherubs, urns, foliage, and flowers, and a large medallion with a couple of fleur de lis on it and topped with a smiling face. Below the parapet is an arcaded cornice supported by fancy brackets. The walls of the building are covered in cream terra cotta tiles with a mottled brown finish punctuated at regular intervals by rosettes. There is a cream, red, and green shield on a blue back ground plopped in the corner. The photo also shows the top of an arched window bordered by urns, rosettes, angry fish, and lots of flowers and leaves.
