The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

Bari Weiss is the logical endpoint of corporate media. This is what happens when people who hate journalism are in charge of it. The only way journalism works is when it’s independent from the power it’s supposed to hold to account, which means ownership can’t have anything to do with those in power

Per NY Times’s Michael Grynbaum on X, this is Sharyn Alfonsi’s email to her “60 Minutes” colleagues in full:
News Team,
Thank you for the notes and texts. I apologize for not reaching out earlier.
I learned on Saturday that Bari Weiss spiked our story, INSIDE CECOT, which was supposed to air tonight. We (Ori and I) asked for a call to discuss her decision. She did not afford us that courtesy/opportunity.
Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices. It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now-after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision, it is a political one.
We requested responses to questions and/or interviews with DHS, the White House, and the State Department. Government silence is a statement, not a VETO. Their refusal to be interviewed is a tactical maneuver designed
to kill the story.
If the administration's refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, wehave effectively handed them a "kill switch" for any reporting they find inconvenient.
If the standard for airing a story becomes
"the government must agree to be
interviewed," then the government effectively gains control over the 60 Minutes broadcast.
We go from an investigative powerhouse to a stenographer for the state.
These men risked their lives to speak with us.
We have a moral and professional obligation to the sources who entrusted us with their
stories. Abandoning them now is a betrayal of the most basic tenet of journalism: giving voice to the voiceless.
CBS spiked the Jeffrey Wigand interview due to legal concerns, nearly destroying the credibility of this broadcast. It took years to recover from that "low point." By pulling this story to shield an administration, we are repeating that history, but for political optics rather than legal ones.We have been promoting this story on social media for days. Our viewers are expecting it.
When it fails to air without a credible
explanation, the public will correctly identify this as corporate censorship. We are trading 50 years of "Gold Standard" reputation for a single week of political quiet.
I care too much about this broadcast to watch
it be dismantled without a fight.
Sharyn

CBS paid the president of the United States millions in bribe money and now they censor news reports so it does not annoy him. I don’t know how much plainer we can put this.

I’m not the first person to make this observation, but this being the biggest story in the world at present really speaks to how much Twitter still serves as a universal assignments editor for English-language journalists.

New, from me: America is no longer a functioning democracy. It is a competitive authoritarian system, hurtling rapidly toward authoritarianism. This was a hard piece to write but we can't move forward if we don’t acknowledge where we are. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-author...

i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.

In every third-country removal to Africa that we know of — Rwanda, South Sudan, Eswatini — the people were imprisoned there. There may be third-country removals to Mauritania, Equatorial Guinea etc, that ICE hasn’t confirmed, with people there also imprisoned. hardghistory.ghost.io/exclusive-ic...

Israel pioneered this tactic a decade ago: deporting 4,000 asylum seekers to Uganda and Rwanda, where they faced horrific conditions and were often funneled into deadly trafficking networks. I investigated this shadow deportation system for @newrepublic.com in 2018: newrepublic.com/article/1488...

Great stuff

Cuomo said he would make affordability a cornerstone of his general-election campaign but would run on the notion that he will actually be able to make the city more affordable while Mamdani will only talk about it. “It’s about not just connecting with the perception of the problem. It’s finding the real solution and then having the ability to do it. You don’t want someone who just connects. That’s step one. What you really want is the problem-solver, and I can actually do that.”

So what would he do on housing affordability? “There is no real answer,”

ICE is no longer immigration enforcement. It’s a sprawling secret police with a budget bigger than some nations’ armies. No oversight. Questionable training. Just masks, unmarked vans, and executive authority. If you think this stops at the border, you’re not paying attention.

The main lessons to me of Mamdani’s win: 1. Democratic voters really are fed up with their fossilized, incompetent establishment. 2. Housing is by far the number one issue, and if you want to beat that establishment, own the housing issue by pledging to make it easier to build housing of all kinds

One bad Trump thing is not a distraction from another bad Trump thing. The cacophony of multiple bad Trump things at once is one single thing. It is not possible to get everyone to focus on one part of that chaos, since all the bad parts are bad enough to merit attention, and the chaos is the thing.

There's nothing immutable about the existence of ICE. It was founded in 2003. U.S. agencies carried out immigration enforcement and border controls before it was formed. Given the evidently lawless way its agents keep acting, one can see the case for its dissolution growing.

If these supposed federal ICE agents refuse to wear identification, according to the right, would I not be a “good guy with a gun” if I intervene to save someone from abduction? Is this not what they have cried about for decades for why we need the 2A?
