Exactly. Individuals create money (and value) all the time. Banks create money through lending to people who create value. Both of these things are why the total amount of money grows over time. (Tho money predates banks, it does not predate individual lending)

If you do work for your neighbour, they might pay you in money. But if they pay you in a favour that favour itself is the money you're paid in. Between you two you have created money (and value, since a sink is now fixed and whatever they do for you is also valuable)

also the reason we evolved currency was in part to make credit on favours transferable.

Claire Hosking @hoskingc.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Who cares what people say. economists said for a long time that money came from barter, but they had no historical evidence for that hypothesis. I care what the anthropological evidence shows in how debt/credit systems evolved into money.

If you fix your neighbour's sink and they give you credit on a favour, you just earned some money then.

Claire Hosking @hoskingc.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
are you being serious? money originates from debt. Systems for tracking IOUs evolved into the currency we have today.

Claire Hosking @hoskingc.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
This is not quite true. Individuals don't make currency, but they can make IOUs which are a form of money. So if you fixed your neighbour's sink and they owe you a favour, you have effectively created some money. When they pay back the favour, that money ceases to exist.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

I don't think LLM-based software systems are like homeopathy in the sense that they don't work at all; they're more like cars, in the sense that they do do the things they're meant to do but those things are not generally good for society.

Tons of studies to prove it, and 50 years of failure of diet/exercise approaches to slow the rise in obesity. And sure, subsidising GLP-1RAs would probably be sensible from a health budget point of view and save a lot of money on obesity-related conditions.

The gov should put ozempic on the pbs. Possibly other glp1s too. We know that weight loss is almost impossible through diet and exercise alone unless you've lucked into a body with good homeostasis, & a socio-economic environ that enables it (weight is strongly tied to socio-economic status).

I don't think it's going to be clear cut when we get to it. Which was the first intelligent organic animal? Hard to pick a point between early jellyfish with nerve nets and humans with brains where intelligence kicks in. Likewise, we'll see a continous improvement in machine thinking slowly.

late thoughts but the whole hank green knitting controversy feels unfair. It's literally the job of a science communicator to report when new knowledge is discovered, in this case a woman physicist who knits discovered new knowledge on the physics of knitting. Yes knitters did not know that before.
