All of the penicillin in use worldwide comes from a strain of mold that was growing on a cantaloupe bought at a grocery store in Peoria, Illinois in 1942.

I had that whole scene memorized, and would recite it to my sister regularly. The scene in the junkyard scared me so much though

Humaning.
A four-panel comic. In panel 1, a Northern Cardinal and American Goldfinch perch above a busy crowd in a city, looking down. The cardinal says "It's a nice day to go humaning." The goldfinch says "Just look at them. Majestic." In panel 2, a close-up of the two birds. The cardinal says "Nobody tells you that you'll reach a certain age and suddenly get into humaning. I hit 3 years old, and then bam."The birds are looking out over the crowd scene. In panel 3, the cardinal says "Their calls sound funny to us, but each one has a unique meaning." Below, people are saying various things: "I'm tired." "Where's my phone?" "I'd murder a burrito." In panel 4, the birds look down excitedly at a man walking by. The cardinal says "Wait, is that a guy who got dressed in the dark and put his shirt on inside out and backwards?" And the goldfinch exclaims, "Holy... that's a lifer!"

my actual attitude about AI right now is that it's really useful for software dev but we have to find practices that mitigate the intellectual and material / environmental harms before we uncritically adopt it, and that means engaging with critique

There's a guy who ids all the smartweeds, and we talk about him every time we see one. Honestly, i probably include a lot more smartweed observations, just because of him. Still can't tell them apart at all though.

We already have a shitty, exclusionary place in sports: it's called men's sports. They built it like that on purpose. Let them own it and figure that out for themselves. Women's sports were built in opposition to that structure, built for inclusion. The WNBA has represented the best of that.

Parents are allowed to, it's just not limited to parents, in a pinch. The point is more no one can come back later and say the baptism doesn't "count" because the person doing it didn't meet x,y,z criteria

Cup plant showing why it's called that We're slowly removing the scrub that's taken over the remnant prairie side the previous stewards became unable to care for the cemetery. 2 years ago the cup plants were stunted in the shade. Now? They're already over 6' tall and still going up
A large leaf that grows all around the square stem, like a giant gravy boat. It's visibly full of water in the middle, maybe around half a cup?
