It's Time
Annual cicada nymph just starting to crack. Soon it will open up and disgorge the adult. It's brown and dusty and already looks like nightmare fuel

Cup plant showing why it's called that We're slowly removing the scrub that's taken over the remnant prairie side the previous stewards became unable to care for the cemetery. 2 years ago the cup plants were stunted in the shade. Now? They're already over 6' tall and still going up
A large leaf that grows all around the square stem, like a giant gravy boat. It's visibly full of water in the middle, maybe around half a cup?

It's been a busy time at the prairie! Last year we were glad to see very little garlic mustard, so we didn't schedule a dedicated work day. Oops Thanks to our regular and irregular volunteers who put in the work on very short notice! This is Saturday afternoon's batch

We've got a new sign showcasing our veterans! Thanks to Colonel John C. Bryner Camp 67 of the Sons of Union Veterans if the Civil War
Nice white sign with black text next to an old entrance sign to the cemetery. It has the crest of the donors, Colonel John C. Bryner Camp 67 of the Sons of Union Veterans if the Civil War

Then the names of one War of 1812 vet and 10 Civil War vets all on the union side

Hunting season is upon us! Adjacent lands often have hunting, so consider a fashionable orange cap! Our neighbors would appreciate it if you visit one of the other wonderful local parks during shotgun seasons (Shotgun season is Nov 21, 22, 23, and Dec 4, 5, 6, 7)

This is a cool write up about the community science enabled by iNat Depending on when they looked at raccoon pictures, our raccoons might have been looked at and measured! You can check out what we've been seeing, or add what you see when you visit, to our iNat project

OK, so. Bluecheep, but in an old cemetery (and if you like the comic, Rosemary Mosco is hilarious)
bluejay who is having a catastrophic molt. She's sitting on a tree like a normal bird but with absolutely no head feathers, so she looks like a horror bird on top

Happy #InsectThursday! The hot weather hasn't been good for our human volunteers, but the butterflies are loving it! Here we've got a Eastern Giant Swallowtail and a Silver-Spotted Skipper sharing a Joe Pye Weed flower

We're looking at different places in the cemetery to see what animals use different parts of it. This raccoon was as interested in the camera as we are in them! #Prairie #TrailCam

Look who we saw on the #TrailCam! This almost invisible friend is an American Woodcock, famous for saying "peent" and having even sillier nicknames! I'm torn between liking "timberdoodle" or "bogsucker" best #birds
Pixelated pic of a brown and brown bird barely visible among brown leaves and brown sticks. It's vaguely sandpiper shaped

Coyotes are seen regularly in Root Cemetery. They're usually moving a little fast for the camera, but we're always excited to see them! #TrailCam #IllinoisNaturePreserve #Wildlife

Last October we had a good view of this Coopers Hawk! These birds eat mostly other birds, so when they're hanging out the songbirds go really quiet 🤐

The trees and larger bushes look good, the old grasses have been burned away, and the spring green vegetation is untouched. Small gravestones are visible that had previously been hidden by old brush
