Reacher Gilt is on my very short list of favorite villains in Discworld (I’ve named video game characters after him) and I think the reason he works so well is that he’s the exact kind of bad guy that Moist would be if he fully embraced his dark side and, ultimately, that’s why he doesn’t

I often see people claim that because clean energy sources like solar, wind, or nuclear are manufactured using fossil fuels their emissions are high. But thats absolutely not the case: even accounting for full lifecycle emissions they are vastly better than burning coal or gas:

That’s pretty much how I run every game that focuses on scene resolution. We ALL talk about what we expect the outcome of a roll will look like before the dice are picked up — usually with me asking the player first how they want this to go down and then setting the stakes.

The fossil industry has simple motives: maximising fossil fuel combustion (more that = more $) Climate is simple too: the more combustion, the worse it gets (more so for each new tonne burned) so...the fossil industry supports the things that make climate change (and our lives) worse, consistently

Reacher absolutely encapsulates this, in part because Reacher as a character is a man without a social community or a social life. He kills and moves on, leaving his ties behind, never considering possibilities other than death for those he considers his enemies.

And yes, there is no way we can force people to act more ethically or to consider history in their decisions. But we can at least make sure students have a grounding in history, in ethics, in moral philosophy so that they are equipped to make those decisions whether they choose to do so or not.

Some high schools have absolutely been neglecting liberal arts education. But the real value of college is that it’s not taught by your parents. You can homeschool your child pre-K via HS. More broadly, the real struggle of college is that it has to teach whatever your parents missed.

Estimates for the death toll of US and British strategic bombing, for instance, range from 300,000 to 600,000 in Europe and around 330,000 in Japan (including the atomic bombings). Which is both a big number and also literally a rounding error on total civilian deaths.

There’s a reason why crimes against peace are one of the most serious crimes a state can commit. Unjustifiably starting a war makes you culpable for *the existence of a state of war*, not just the casualties your forces directly caused.

Higher Education is not just about training workers, but also about training citizen leaders and good citizenship in part means thinking that the details matter, that getting them right matters, because it impacts some of your fellow citizens. "It only matters if job" is poison to citizenship.

This is Star Wars to a tee. Surprisingly, Durge from original Clone Wars animation miniseries and comics is the only exception I can think of. Murderous, sadistic bounty hunter, with biological immortality and anti-lightsaber muscles. His homeworld? Pacifist isolationist monks.
A still from Star Wars Cone Wars miniseries. Obiwan in battle armour wields a lightsaber faces a hulking monster. The monster (Durge) is masked, with body exposed of pink muscles. The background is rubble and smoke.

While privateering, piracy and commerce raiding all get banned. And that may seem cynical - it is - but it's also the only way to get the rules even minimally followed. If you make international law that hurts great powers, they will ignore it and you end up back at maximum violence.
