I’m for the war ending. But this deal - which boils down to the U.S. paying Iran billions to open the Strait - is final proof of how predictably disastrous this war was.

I think one thing the right does way better than the (broad) left is giving people room to come over; of having a stance of accepting converts rather than looking at everyone as a probable double agent set to destroy us from within.

I also really want to flag this: Collins is significantly more MAGA this time around than she was in Trump 1.0. In 2017, she opposed Betsy DeVos’s confirmation and the Obamacare repeal bill. She also bought herself time with opposing Barrett. Now, she voted to confirm RFK Jr. AND Tulsi Gabbard

My final piece on Graham Platner and the US Senate race. At almost 5000 words, it's long but based on several meetings with Platner and others. I'm not arguing with people online, so there are no comments. Life is too short to be stressed. open.substack.com/pub/shaystew...

Platner is the presumptive candidate, but is he the right person? My Final Thoughts
NOTE: Almost certainly this piece will travel beyond my usual readership, so I thought it wise to add a quick preface.

"I also can’t quite blame those who detest Platner’s leftwing politics for refusing to give him the benefit of the doubt. They have an easy line of attack, and naturally they’re going to use it. Still, it’s worth drawing a distinction between what is true and what makes an easy political narrative."

Susan Collins just gave Donald Trump the green light to take further unilateral military action that could push the United States into another endless war without oversight. She doesn't have the courage to stand up to the President, even when American lives are on the line.

Today's explanation for the Iran War (they shift by the minute) is that Israel was going to attack and so we had to as well. We were "forced" into war by Netanyahu. That's the definition of weakness - being suckered into a war of choice that no American wants.

My statement on President Trump’s combat operations in Iran⬇️
OCASIO-CORTEZ STATEMENT ON
TRUMP'S COMBAT OPERATIONS IN IRAN
"The American people are once again dragged into a war they did not want by a president who does not care about the long-term consequences of his actions. This war is unlawful. It is unnecessary. And it will be catastrophic.

"Just this week, Iran and the United States were negotiating key measures that could have staved off war. The President walked away from these discussions and chose war instead.President Trump flippantly acknowledged the possibility of American casualties, stating "that often happens in war.'

"Mr. President: this was not an inevitability. This is a deliberate choice of aggression when diplomacy and security were within reach. Stop lying to the American people.

"Violence begets violence. We learned this lesson in Iraq. We learned this lesson in Afghanistan. And we are about to learn it again in Iran. Bombs have yet to create enduring democracies in the region and this will be no different.

"In moments of war, our Constitution is unambiguous: Congress authorizes war. The President does not. I will do my part to uphold our Constitution by voting YES on Representatives Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie's War Powers Resolution. Every member of Congress must join us in rejecting this aimless war.

My statement on the Trump Administration’s actions in Venezuela.
For decades, presidents of both parties have irresponsibly expanded presidential power, circumventing both domestic and international safeguards in the name of national security. No modern American administration, however, has so routinely ignored the Constitution and misled Congress as the current one.

I have fidelity to our Constitution even if I do not have sympathy for Nicolás Maduro.

We live in the shadow of endless wars over regime change and oil, often launched in the language of democracy and safety. We have seen how overestimating the capacity for a peaceful transfer of power can lead to the illusion of short term success, while undermining our own security and global influence in the long term.

At a minimum, these individual actions legally and substantively demand Congressional action and public consultation. But collectively, the military operations we have seen in the Caribbean, the Pacific, and, now, on land in Venezuela, present a significant escalation of unilateral action that betrays a larger goal by this administration. Beyond arguments for or against any individual action, the Trump Administration is clearly seeking to remake the global order in a way that will, ultimately, benefit authoritarians and adversaries.

Our values and principles as a nation matter most when we have seemingly altruistic reasons to violate them. I oppose a “might makes right in my neighborhood” foreign policy. It is amoral, illegal, dangerous, and lays the foundation for bad actors like Russia and China. History is littered with conflict, atrocities, and global wars ushered in under that philosophy. And those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat its mistakes.
