CA has been used to examine numerous activities, from how patients introduce their problems to the ways in which medical decisions are negotiated and communicated. CA studies range from basic work on the fundamentals of human interaction, to applied research aimed at contributing to service improvement. What does this workshop cover? The workshop will provide an overview of the application of CA to healthcare interactions, including interactions between medical doctors, patients, and family members, and interactions with other healthcare professionals. The workshop will include in-depth information and practical work on CA’s methodology including data analysis and examination of some key findings of CA research in healthcare. The workshop aims to enable learning and enhancement of participants’ skills in CA’s methods of analysis. How is the workshop structured? This 2-day workshop will run from 10am to 3.30pm (BST) on the first day and 9am-4pm (BST) on the second day. It will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams. Presentations by the facilitators will cover fundamental aspects of CA and its applications to the study of healthcare interactions. The workshop will feature practical sessions and small-group work on video data provided by the facilitators. There will be a strong emphasis on hands-on experience of working with data alongside and discussion with facilitators. We will ask participants to complete a short activity in their own time after the end of the first workshop day. There will also be some preparatory readings ahead of the workshop. Who is the workshop for? The workshop is open to postgraduates, post-docs, researchers, practitioners, and faculty who have some familiarity with CA as a research methodology (including CA transcription conventions). The number of participants will be restricted to 20 to maximise opportunities for participation in the online environment. Registration fee: - For employed academics, practitioners, and PhD students with training budgets: £150 - For unwaged academics, practitioners, and PhD students without training budgets: £30 - Commercial applicants: please get in touch with us to discuss your participation We encourage potential attenders who are unwaged or otherwise less able to afford the registration to contact the organisers as fees are negotiable in some circumstances. To apply Please send an email to m.pino@lboro.ac.uk introducing yourself and telling us about your existing knowledge of CA (including through self-study) and your plans for using CA in your own research or practice. Deadline for applications: 13th June 2025. Decisions will be communicated by the 20th of June 2025. We will allocate places based on these criteria: • Being an applicant from regions where there are fewer CA training opportunities (see http://emcawiki.net/Where_to_study_EMCA) • Familiarity with CA

A year ago our faculty commissioned & adopted guidance on GenAI and research integrity. Preamble below, pdf at osf.io/preprints/os..., text also at ideophone.org/generative-a... Key to these guidelines is a values-first rather than a technology-first approach, based on NL code of research conduct
Preamble

All research at our institution, from ideation and execution to analysis and reporting, is bound by the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. This code specifies five core values that organise and inform research conduct: Honesty, Scrupulousness, Transparency, Independence and Responsibility.

One way to summarise the guidelines in this document is to say they are about taking these core values seriously. When it comes to using Generative AI in or for research, the question is if and how this can be done honestly, scrupulously, transparently, independently, and responsibly.

A key ethical challenge is that most current Generative AI undermines these values by design [3–5; details below]. Input data is legally questionable; output reproduces biases and erases authorship; fine-tuning involves exploitation; access is gated; versioning is opaque; and use taxes the environment.

While most of these issues apply across societal spheres, there is something especially pernicious about text generators in academia, where writing is not merely an output format but a means of thinking, crediting, arguing, and structuring thoughts. Hollowing out these skills carries foundational risks.

A common argument for Generative AI is a promise of higher productivity [5]. Yet productivity does not equal insight, and when kept unchecked it may hinder innovation and creativity [6, 7]. We do not need more papers, faster; we rather need more thoughtful, deep work, also known as slow science [8–10].

For these reasons, the first principle when it comes to Generative AI is to not use it unless you can do so honestly, scrupulously, transparently, independently and responsibly. The ubiquity of tools like ChatGPT is no reason to skimp on standards of research integrity; if anything, it requires more vigilance.
