Of *course* the ‘AI boom’ will make us poorer. It’s a ‘boom’ created by tech bros for tech bros, and they’re pretty much the worst human beings on the planet. How could it possibly do anything else?

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

This seems a good thing but I’m not sure it’s ideal that the UK’s cordon sanitaire against the far right is a random number generator mediated by an unevenly distributed set of levers poorly labelled “Tactical Vote?”

On a train so I am permitted one increasingly absurd q&a session with AI. This is after several obvious or less obvious confabulations.
Rather than admitting I did not have a verified, cataloged text in memory, I generated a confident-sounding citation that was completely untrue.

The honest answer to your original question

Jonathan Haidt is arguably the most impactful social scientist in recent years with his calls for teen social media bans. Maybe because he inhabits that 3rd space where the distinction between pseudo and rigorous research is unclear to non-experts and therefore easily exploited.

Feeling profoundly lucky to have had to read carefully, write stuff that took time, learn modern stats I wouldn't have had the self-discipline to do it if I could have relied on AI since HS I fear a whole lot of researchers are going to suffer appropriately from imposter syndrome in the future
