The Speckled Wood was once called the “Wood Argus”, its eye-spots recalling Argus, the many-eyed giant guardian of Greek myth. Its scientific name, “Pararge aegeria”, also has a woodland link: Egeria was a Roman nymph associated with springs and sacred groves. #FolkloreSunday

Sept. 23, 1926: André Cassagnes, the inventor of the Etch A Sketch, is born outside Paris. The French electrical technician happened upon the idea for the toy, introduced in 1959, by penciling over a translucent switch cover covered in aluminum dust and noticing it transferred to the other side.

It is back to school everyone! And to mark that, we have here William Keble Martin's paintbox which was used for his well loved Concise British Flora in Colour (1965) published when Martin was 88. It has 1,400 species of plants and has been the inspiration for many budding botanists ever since.

A few years ago I went to a pig sanctuary and most of the pigs were stoned from eating green acorns. This one, Wilbur, couldn’t stand up and was too big to lift, so the staff had to leave him in this bush and wait for him to sober up.

Swifts don’t stop to feed their chicks one insect at a time. Instead, they collect hundreds in a special pouch in their throat, then head back to the nest with a little insect-packed parcel. It can contain up to 1,000 insects. 🤯 Check out that throat pouch 👇 📷 @mart-the-gooner.bsky.social

Other names for Chicory are ‘watcher-of-the-road’ and ‘blue sailor weed’. A legend tells of a maiden who waited by the roadside for her beloved, never knowing he had been lost at sea. Tears from her blue eyes became the flower, forever watching for his return. #FairytaleTuesday

June’s full moon is known in Europe as the #RoseMoon, named for the season when roses are at their glorious peak. In North America it is the Strawberry Moon, marking the strawberry harvest, while elsewhere it is called the Hot Moon, reflecting the arrival of summer heat in June.

25th June is the feast day of St William of Vercelli. In the Saints’ Calendar of Flowers, sweet Williams (Dianthus barbatus) are dedicated to his day. Old folk names include “London tufts” and “painted ladies”. In floriography they symbolise gallantry & finesse. #FolkloreThursday
This collage showcases the vibrant beauty of Dianthus barbatus, commonly known as sweet William. At left is a detailed botanical illustration from Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse, Vol. 1 (Plate 35) by Edward Step. The surrounding photographs highlight the plant’s rich variety of colours—deep crimson, bright pink, and soft white—seen both in close-up and en masse in a blooming summer border.
