I'm happy to share one of my favorite projects from the past 4 years. 'Piercing mechanism in the minimal contractile tail of bacteriophage P2'. In this preprint, we applied #cryo-EM, #cryo-ET, TEM, and #computationalbiology to study the #phage P2 virion structure and its contraction mechanism.

🔥My first (co)first-author paper is out🔥 The surfaces of Gram+ and Gram- bacteria are markedly different from each other. How are phages equipped to breach the Gram+ envelope❓ 💡We report a baseplate structure uniquely adapted to infect Gram+ S. aureus. A 🧵⬇️ 1/8 #phagesky #cryoEM 🧪

Scripps Research and @pittofficial.bsky.social capture the first cryo-EM & cryo-ET images of a virus infecting TB-causing Mycobacteria, revealing an unexpected infection mechanism that could inform phage therapies for drug-resistant TB, per @cellpress.bsky.social.

I am very happy to announce that we solved the in-virus #cryoEM structure of the #HIV matrix protein. The structure helped us to resolve a long mystery in HIV biology. A🧵1/5 Read more in Nature: www.nature.com/articles/s41... 🧪

We sequenced the anti-RSV-F antibody 131-2a by mass spec, then mapped its epitope by cryoEM. It's widely used to study the antigenic landscape of F, but its sequence wasn't known. Check it out in our new preprint and find it on Addgene: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... www.addgene.org/Joost_Snijder/

2/15 "How are you" is often deemed a 'pointless' or 'filler' question, to which the socially acceptable answer might be a lie ("fine, how are you?"). "How are you" should not be taken as an opportunity to "discuss the crushing reality of existence", says Machell's Guide to Surviving Modern Life.

You're looking at one of the first electron micrographs of T-even bacteriophage, taken by Tom Anderson of RCA labs, published with Luria & Delbrück. On seeing the images, famed immunologist Jacques Bronfonbrenner exclaimed: “Mein Gott, they’ve got tails!”
some T-even phage are indistinct in a micrograph, with a hand-drawn scale bar labeld as 1 mu (micron). Source in next skeet.
