In the background, mist rises over a field just starting to recover from a controlled burn, with tree covered hills barely visible in the distance. In the foreground, a purple dotted with rainwater blooms from a curling vine. The flower looks like it is from the moon but it is actually a passion flower. I do not know enough flower anatomy to describe it but it is alien and purple with fine maroon stripes and a green stamen.

This is totally speculative but I think there is a feeling that if an outside consultant is using AI, they’re doing work that could be done by anyone. whereas when existing staff use AI, they’re expanding what they are able to do.

For corporations this is work that used to be done in house by employees, but is now being outsourced. For small orgs, I think this might be an attempt to expand services without expanding or asking more of staff.

I have a feeling that a new consulting role is opening up: boutique consultant who doesn’t use AI, to be contracted by AI-dependent organizations to provide specialized (human) services

DH friends. Anyone have ideas for publication venues for outcomes of smaller bits of exploratory work? We have some fun outcomes but probably don’t want to spend time working them into something big; but feel they are interesting to the community. I know I’m forgetting something obvious!

(this is really just about the opening paragraphs to this book review, which is very thoughtful overall, and definitely not an apology for coercive production work under dismal and demeaning conditions)

Sorry to have a take no one asked for this morning, but while the "physical and psychic toil" of the chinese production line is undoubtedly real, factory jobs can be good, fulfilling work. The most soul killing work I've done was in the knowledge economy, not a factory.

I do not think we should have a death penalty. I don't think it is any kind of deterrent. I think it's barbaric. I think it makes us all worse people. All of us. And we just don't have to do this to ourselves. We could abolish it, and we should.

not to state the obvious but if you teach aspiring writers, like as a history or literature prof, it’s worth knowing the state of the industry. It’s also worth knowing what labor organizing looks like in this field.
