Anyway it is very obvious that this tech gets us further from not closer to the flourishing envisioned by those who dreamt of time to cultivate learning, movement and self-expression. It just gets us closer to consuming simulacra of these things — along with health, wealth and security — on a screen

Absolutely. Someone posted in one of my local Facebook groups about how we should talk to our kids about rape culture-- and already there are toxic responses blaming the victim and saying we should not believe all women. It made me nauseous to read those responses.

I live in a swing district. While I see lawn signs supporting local (town council) Republican candidates, I see virtually no one publicly supporting the Republican congressman (Tom Kean Jr.) Hopefully that's indicative that this House seat will flip blue.

ok now I want to hear everyone's interview stories. Once on an interview (campus visit) I was sent on a campus tour that was clearly designed for prospective undergrads (I was a professor). "this is the laundry room in the dorm for first-year students!" Not highly relevant.

The scholars who guest edited MLN's French issue (just published) sent me flowers in appreciation (even though managing the journal is my full-time job). I am a single mom constantly working and taking care of other people, so gestures of appreciation like this overwhelm me-- in the best way. ❤️

I'm very proud of this issue-- especially because it says "September 2026" on the cover and it printed this month, in September 2026. Until my hire (in 2024), MLN had not had a managing editor since 1910. It's taken me two years to get on the production schedule and I am not relinquishing that.

Here is @lutzfernandez.bsky.social:
Most of what I have to say about this is unpublishable. If the teenagers at this school are being subject to much of what has been posted on Twitter via the Alpha Schools account, someone there needs to be reminded that teenagers are children. They are not soldiers in an army, they are not adults at a business school, they are not workers in a pressure cooker environment.

I spent 10 years on Wall Street in mergers and acquisitions, and my 20- and 30-something colleagues and I were not treated as these students appear to be. Especially dark is the biometric monitoring, which sounds like something a CIA trainee would be subjected to. Students in “normal” schools face serious pressure to achieve and are increasingly over-surveilled. This takes those elements to a new and unheard of level – and especially if the leaders of Alpha School aim to influence how schooling is done across the United States, I’m profoundly disturbed.

When I first saw the tweets that purported to be from kids at Alpha School, I didn't think they could be real. But even if not real, they are being shared by the school to promote its approach, which they repeatedly claim is so much better than "normal" school. Worth reading this entire thread.

A friend just brought me this anniversary edition of Grande Sertão: Veredas. Interesting choice to not make the title visible on the spine (it’s there— but not easy to decipher when shelved with other books). Instead, the spine shows the way the book is bound-- stitching and signatures.

This book is a blast—moving, inventive, thoughtful, compassionate. Had the great fortune to see Noel teach kids at a writing workshop we worked at in the Bronx—he electrified them. Books don’t always have to exude a writer’s personality, but sometimes I’m glad when they do.
