i think that driving should be legal as long as everyone is issued a remote that can shut off the engine of every car in a 100-foot radius. this would be great if a driver is being unsafe, or if they're driving fine but you're just bored or having a bad day

The total lack of any feelings of communal responsibility in this country is the root of why it's collapsing. You can't have a functional democracy with a population this selfish and stupid.

Like there’s a ton of individual issues but the broader problem is that there’s an assault on giving a shit about anyone besides yourself, nihilism that tells people the only way to prevent getting hurt is to hurt enough other people and that sickness is filtering into the bones of everything.

It's so fucking convenient that they get to "fear for their lives" anytime they want to absolve themselves of anything and when we actually fear for our lives because of them and do anything a scared person would do it's justification for our death.

“Making eye contact” is not only ineffective, it is impossible in many situations, including when drivers are distracted, traveling at excessive speeds, or have tinted windows. This messaging also discriminates against children, people with visual impairment, and people with disabilities.

baseball traditionalists:

If you watch more than 5 games out of the 162 games available for your local team, You start to realize baseball is about more than just throwing the ball and swinging the bat. It's even more obvious when you actually begin attending games live. The best part of baseball is the game going on in between the pitches. Who's warming up in the bullpen? Who is left on the bench? What counter substitutions will the other team make if my team makes this change? It's the game within a game that makes pro baseball especially fun. It's the strategy, the matchups, it's the tension, it's the mental aspect of the game. That is lost when everyone is focused on a pitch clock or how many disengagements from the rubber the pitcher has made or how many throws to first are lef—

My not-evidence-backed theory: we spent the better part of a year where the most conscientious people stayed home while others went out. Conscientious people are like nuclear control rods preventing bad social reactions in group settings. By the time they reentered, it was too late: new normal.

Agreed with the Cooler Heads here. This act of political violence may one day soon serve as pretext to justify federal occupation of progressive cities or even unaccountable militias imprisoning people of color without due process at impenetrable, inhumane black sites. Well, I sure hope not!

They don't listen to podcasts, they just know they make money. So the idea is to flood platforms with useless shit and hope to steal the money by virtue of existing. It's how braindead techbros see everything.

Hot take, I don't think the majority of people are capable of driving a car with the maturity or skill appropriate for such a potentially consequential activity. And demonstrate constantly that folks are terrible judges of their own skill and capacity.

Cars, which kill hundreds of New Yorkers every year, are allowed to go 10 mph above the speed limit before they get ticketed by speed cams.

going to the dump with my mother-in-law who lives in rural Maine (as well as my own trips to dispose of large items) led me to the same conclusion. seeing what happens to your trash as it literally piles up in nature is pretty radicalizing, though there are still lots of people who will never care.

We are living in one of the few times in human history where you can buy a loaf of bread and if it says it’s made with wheat flour and salt and yeast and water and nothing else, it’s probably made from just those ingredients, and some people want to END this.

A big problem in modern America is that people are way too blasé about being lied to (and/or about). If someone lies to your face, in a way that is obvious to all parties, that is a fucking INSULT and I don't care if you're a reporter, a politician, whatever, you need to tell them where to shove it.

Everything must grow forever at all times. Such is the Rot Economy. Games cannot be "kind of popular" or "profitable," they must always be insanely profitable. If you aren't growing you're dying www.wheresyoured.at/the-rot-econ...
At the center of everything I’ve written for the last few months (if not the last few years), sits a cancerous problem with the fabric of how capital is deployed in modern business. Public and private investors, along with the markets themselves, have become entirely decoupled from the concept of what “good” business truly is, focusing on one metric — one truly noxious metric — over all else: growth.

“Growth” in this case is not necessarily about being “bigger” or “better,” it is simply “more.” It means that the company is generating more revenue, higher valuations, gaining more market share, and then finding more ways to generate these things. Businesses are expected to be - and rewarded for being - eternal burning engines of capital that create more and more shareholder value while, hopefully, providing a service to a customer in the process. In the public markets, that means that companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft were rewarded for having unfocused, capital-intensive businesses that required mass layoffs when times got tough, because the market loved the idea that they’d found a way to save money. They weren’t punished for their poor planning, their stagnating products, their mismanagement of human capital, or their general lack of any real innovation because the numbers kept going up.

There was a hidden insight in Trump's Access Hollywood tape comment that “When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.” It's not merely a crude brag. It's an observation that the forces that don't "allow" certain actions for others are ultimately negotiable and arbitrary.

if you live around conservatives, a common bumper sticker reads “liberalism is a mental disorder.” you’ll see effigies of dem politicians, unhinged screeds about satan-worshipping dems written on lawn signs. this stuff gets ignored while any hint of condescension from liberals is treated as endemic

One thing Stephen Miller and Trump intuitively get is knowing who they can hurt without much consequence; they wouldn't try otherwise. That same bully's instinct basically explains how cops operate. On top of every other odious thing about this, Biden is making the same calculation. It's disgusting.
