I had the fascinating experience yesterday of attending the CT scanning of these incredible Ken Parker guitars! The next book I'll be contributing to is on the history, science, and art of guitars, and I'm really excited to get into it! You would not *believe* how light that electric guitar is!
Insanely thin, gently curved Parker Fly electric guitar known as the Potato Chip sitting on the bed of a CT scanner. It's so thin that the pickup comes through the front and back sides, which you can just see here. It's all black and looks like it fell off a spaceship.Archtop acoustic guitar ("Lucky") on the scanner bed. It's about 12 years old, but the golden-brown textured finish makes it look much older. Instead of the usual spot in front, under the strings, the sound hole is at the top and front of the upper bout, with a narrow slate dividing the two holes. The neck is set in front of the level of the body so that it looks like it's floating, and the pick guard is mounted in a similar way. The tailpiece is a gently curved mixed-metal triangle with patterns like wood grain. It's an incredible almost retro-futuristic design.

Mechanics of compression-driven morphogenesis Read this Review from our special issue #DevSIextracellular by Jue Yu Kelly Tan and Chii Jou Chan. journals.biologists.com/dev/article/...
Modulation of tissue dynamics by compressive stress during development. (A) Mouse ovarian follicle growth requires contractile theca cell activity and confinement by the extracellular matrix (ECM) to regulate intrafollicular pressure, which, in turn, balances granulosa cell division (yellow) and death (purple). Arrows indicate compressive stress. (B) The Drosophila leg disc is mechanically confined by the peripodial envelope, which induces compressive stress buildup (arrows) and eventually cell apoptosis at the distal tip. (C) Differential planar growth in the Drosophila wing imaginal disc pouch generates a heterogenous mechanical stress field (arrows), with tensile stresses in the peripheral cells (green) and compressive stress in the central cells (blue). These stresses regulate cell division patterns. (D) During Arabidopsis anther lobe formation, faster growth in the inner lobe (single arrows) causes pressure buildup, causing the lobe epidermis to stretch (double arrows). (E) In the zebrafish follicle, rapid expansion of the future micropyle precursor cell mechanically compresses the adjacent granulosa cells, inducing nuclear export of TAZ in the granulosa cells. This restricts micropyle precursor fate to a single cell through mechanical lateral inhibition. (F) In avian skin follicle patterning, dermal cell aggregation generates compressive forces on the overlying epidermis, inducing β-catenin translocation from the membrane to the nucleus and initiating feather follicle fate specification. (G) Cephalic furrow formation during Drosophila gastrulation serves as a pressure-relieving transient fold that dissipates excess compressive stress generated from tissue collisions between the head and trunk (germ band) extension. (H) Growth under confinement generates internal compressive stresses in Escherichia coli biofilms that drive surface buckling and wrinkle formation.

Fundamental limits on symmetry breaking by Turing-like activator-inhibitor mechanisms Read this Research Article from our special issue #DevSIextracellular by Daniel Muzatko, Bijoy Daga and @hiscocklab.bsky.social from @uniofaberdeen.bsky.social. journals.biologists.com/dev/article/...
An atlas of symmetry-breaking activator-inhibitor circuits. (A-D) Predicted expression patterns for each type of inhibitory mechanism and corresponding regulatory circuit(s) from Fig. 4. Plots show spatial distributions of relative mRNA concentrations for the activator (blue) and inhibitor (red), alongside levels of signalling pathway activation (green). (A) Pathway activation is co-expressed (in-phase) with both the activator and inhibitor expression domains. (B) Pathway activation is either in-phase (B1) or out-of-phase (B2) with both the activator and the inhibitor. (C) Pathway activation is out-of-phase (anticorrelated) with the inhibitor, and is either: in-phase with the activator (C1), uniform across the tissue (C2) or out-of-phase with the activator (C3). (D) The two ligands of the two signalling pathways are either expressed out-of-phase with each other (D1) or co-expressed in the same location (D2).

A primitive endoderm-centric view of mammalian development In this Review, @rpkimyip.bsky.social, Denis Faerberg and @eposfai.bsky.social give an overview of mammalian primitive endoderm development, focusing on the mouse and, where appropriate, the human context. 🐭 doi.org/10.1242/dev....
Outline of primitive endoderm/hypoblast lineage development in mouse and human at the embryonic days (E) indicated. The primitive endoderm (PE) (mouse) and hypoblast (human) lineages emerge during pre-implantation development, forming single-layered epithelium lining the blastocoel cavity before implantation. The PE/hypoblast expands following implantation to form the visceral endoderm (VE) and parietal endoderm (ParE). In mouse, part of the VE (indicated by a dashed line) contributes to the embryonic gut, while the remaining VE contributes to the visceral yolk sac (YS); the ParE contributes to the parietal YS. In humans, the primary YS is formed from the VE and the ParE, which is then later replaced by a VE-derived secondary YS.
