Fatuous [FA-choo-us] (adj.) - Foolish, inane, or absurd, especially in a smug, complacent, or unconscious manner. From Latin “fatuus” (foolish, silly, insipid). Of uncertain origin. Recorded in English from the 1530s.
A "Grandiloquent Word of the Day" meme for “Fatuous,” defined as "Foolish, inane, or absurd, especially in a smug, complacent, or unconscious manner." An old-fashioned cartoon depicts a self-satisfied, formally dressed man strutting with a cane and book. Example sentence: “Through some inscrutable failure of Providence, the fatuous prickmedainty has been promoted yet again, leaving his subordinates to wonder whether incompetence is not, after all, the company’s sole managerial qualification.”

We need to call this government what it is: a government of deprivation in favour of corporate interest and greed. There's no provable growth here; just an entrenchment of the same "rich get richer" entitlement. We deserve so much better and people need to learn how economies actually work.

A poem for the equinox by Elizabeth Bishop as it first appeared in The New Yorker 70 years ago this month. This one hits a little different if you've spent time in Bishop's childhood home.
SESTINA

September rain falls on the house. In the failing light, the old grandmother sits in the kitchen with the child beside the Little Marvel Stove, reading the jokes from the almanac, laughing and talking to hide her tears.
She thinks that her equinoctial tears
and the rain that beats on the roof of the house were both foretold by the almanac, but only known to a grandmother. The iron kettle sings on the stove.
She cuts some bread and says to the child,
It's time for tea now; but the child
is watching the teakettle's small hard tears dance like mad on the hot black stove, the way the rain must dance on the house. Tidying up, the old grandmother
hangs up the heartless almanac
on its string. Like a bird, the almanac hovers half open above the child, hovers above the old grandmother and her teacup full of dark brown tears. She shivers and says she thinks the house feels chilly, and puts more wood in the stove. It was to be, says the Marvel Stove. I know what I know, says the almanac. With crayons the child draws a rigid house and a winding pathway. Then the child puts in a man with buttons like tears and shows it proudly to the grandmother.
But secretly, while the grandmother busies herself about the stove,
the little moons fall down like tears
from between the pages of the almanac
into the flower bed the child
has carefully placed in front of the house.
Time to plant tears, says the almanac.
The grandmother sings to the marvellous stove and the child draws another inscrutable house.

George Square
by Jackie Kay

My seventy-seven-year-old father
put his reading glasses on
to help my mother do the buttons
on the back of her dress.
‘What a pair the two of us are!’
my mother said, ‘Me with my sore wrist,
you with your bad eyes, your soft thumbs!’

And off they went, my two parents
to march against the war in Iraq,
him with his plastic hips, her with her arthritis
to congregate at George Square where the banners
waved at each other like old friends, flapping,
where they’d met for so many marches over their years,
for peace on earth, for pity’s sake, for peace, for peace.

As far as I know, 1. #Climate impacts of LLM use are often exaggerated, sometimes wildly 2. Claims that “AI” would be net climate positive are unadulterated horseshit. No efficiency improvement can, by itself, reduce emissions meaningfully and over the long term. What is needed are *limits.*

Must you have a part in everything? William Carlos Williams, in Nancy Willard's Step Lightly: Poems for the Journey (1998)
William Carlos Williams

SMELL!

Oh strong-ridged and deeply hollowed
nose of mine! what will you not be smelling?
What tactless asses we are, you and I boney nose
always indiscriminate, always unashamed,
and now it is the souring flowers of the bedraggled
poplars: a festering pulp on the wet earth
beneath them. With what deep thirst
we quicken our desires
to that rank odor of a passing springtime!
Can you not be decent? Can you not reserve your for ardors
for something less unlovely? What girl will care
for us, do you think, if we continue in these ways?
Must you taste everything? Must you know everything?
Must you have a part in everything?

NZ: Oil consumption fell more than 10% in the second quarter of 2026. Since oil is such a dominant part (>75%) of our CO2 emissions, this took quarterly emissions back to their lowest since March 1996, more than 30 years ago. The drop was even fast than that during the GFC in 2008. [1/2]

i think reporters owe it to the NZ public to stop using euphemisms like "unusual" or adding 'humanising' details to soften what these public figures are doing - associating with extremists and calling their political opponents "barely human". This is very clearly fascist behaviour.

Thatcher applied the brakes to the UK economy just as we were entering a recession in 1980. An economic cock up for the ages, based on voodoo economics. 30 years later the Tories did it again. An insane policy of austerity based on a huge error in the calculations:
