Okay but more seriously, so much of politics today is me tilting my head and narrowing my eyes while I look at someone and try to figure out if they are lying because they think it is politically expedient or if they believe the lie or because they are constitutionally incapable of truth telling

I think about this interview with the distinguished philosopher Conan O'Brien a lot. I actually think this is a healthy way to live your life! www.nytimes.com/2019/01/14/a...
Is this how you want to go out, with a show that gets smaller and smaller until it’s gone?

Maybe that’s O.K. I think you have more of a problem with that than I do. [Laughs.] At this point in my career, I could go out with a grand, 21-gun salute, and climb into a rocket and the entire Supreme Court walks out and they jointly press a button, I’m shot up into the air and there’s an explosion and it’s orange and it spells, “Good night and God love.” In this culture? Two years later, it’s going to be, who’s Conan? This is going to sound grim, but eventually, all our graves go unattended.

You’re right, that does sound grim.

Sorry. Calvin Coolidge was a pretty popular president. I’ve been to his grave in Vermont. It has the presidential seal on it. Nobody was there. And by the way, I’m the only late-night host that has been to Calvin Coolidge’s grave. I think that’s what separates me from the other hosts.

I had a great conversation with Albert Brooks once. When I met him for the first time, I was kind of stammering. I said, you make movies, they live on forever. I just do these late-night shows, they get lost, they’re never seen again and who cares? And he looked at me and he said, [Albert Brooks voice] “What are you talking about? None of it matters.” None of it matters? “No, that’s the secret. In 1940, people said Clark Gable is the face of the 20th Century. Who [expletive] thinks about Clark Gable? It doesn’t matter. You’ll be forgotten. I’ll be forgotten. We’ll all be forgotten.” It’s so funny because you’d think that would depress me. I was walking on air after that.

Writing "wisdom" I hate: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. This is the worst advice ever. It would be better if it was KNOW MORE SO YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT. Every good writer I know is constantly researching and getting new information and asking experts. It's a terrible bit of advice!

I keep telling people about how the Christian "Left Behind" books, literal fantasies about the apocalypse, were super, super popular in the late 90s/ early 2000s. I used to read them. Major disasters, while terrible, were also framed by evangelical churches as titillating...sexy almost.

every subculture wants outsiders to have a super nuanced understanding of it, to read all of its theory, to essentially play a language game that it defines. but the thing is that, when the subculture actually gains power and influence, you're really not under any obligation to play along anymore

Now wondering if I've wrongly assumed that this was common knowledge www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
The problem is, these companies act much more like private enterprises than bastions of science. Much of the research listed in the Publications section on both Anthropic’s and OpenAI’s websites are not peer-reviewed papers accepted by scholarly outlets. I examined 100 recent pieces of research from both companies’ Research pages; the overwhelming majority had no corresponding peer-reviewed paper accepted by a conference or journal. It’s unclear whether these were submitted to academic venues and, if so, whether they were rejected, are under review, or are forthcoming. (Neither OpenAI nor Anthropic responded to requests for comment.)

SHOULD MEN VACUUM MORET

Bouke de Vries

Cross-national surveys show that among heterosexual couples who share a household, women tend to perform more housework than their male partners. Many feminists believe that this must be unjust, the assumptior being that justice requires an equal distribution of housework between the sexes. My aim in this contribution is to challenge this view. To do so, I dis- tinguish three possible interpretations of it. The first says that heterosexual co-residential partners, construed broadly to include married individuals, should do as much housework as their partner and not more. The second interpretation maintains that they should split evenly the housework that must be done to realize a minimally decent living standard. And the third maintains that the housework co-residential male and female partners each perform as a group ought to be equal, whether or not the constituent loads are equalized on an individual household level. All three versions are found to be untenable.

Evidence keeps accumulating that LLMs are a powerfully useful technology for people who already know what they're talking about, and a dangerous outsourcing of cognitive function for people who don't. This can occur within a single individual, who knows a lot about some things and not about others.

The problem with the DNC autopsy isn’t just that it doesn’t mention Gaza. It’s that it ignores policy and, for that matter, politics—how policies are messaged, and what role they play in coalition building—altogether. It is a profoundly weird document that’s almost entirely concerned with fundraising and spending while devoting almost no space to issues, including the two most consequential one: inflation and President Biden’s age and fitness. Those issues, though less morally stark than Gaza, were clearly decisive. And the autopsy ignores them.
