At this point creative professionals should know better than to fuck around with Ai at all, even just "for fun," and if they do it anyway that is a pretty clear signal that they don't give a shit about the livelihoods or wellbeing of any other artists or writers or musicians or anyone else.

I met Mark in a North Beach coffee house a few months ago. He knew some of the people involved with one of the murders I wrote about in my last book and wanted to talk about it. He mentioned a manuscript that he'd been working on too. This is a big loss for The City and bird lovers everywhere.

You ought to know Darrell McNeil, an animator who worked on iconic shows across many studios for over 40 years, including Superfriends, which he laid out and designed the All-New Super Friends endcard and the iconic battle final opening sequence of Challenge of the Superfriends. #BlackHistoryMonth

Darrell Tyrone "Big D" McNeil(1957-2018)
Darrell McNeil was a first-generation TV watcher who truly loved the medium and wanted to be a part of it. He appeared on-screen as a child performer on various programs, including Family Affair, The Partridge Family, and The Brady Bunch, the latter of which he was a background character in 13 episodes. McNeill’s passion was more into animation. While attending UCLA, he took various animation courses and encountered legends like William Hanna, Joseph Barbera, and Art Scott.

Through these encounters, McNeil pitched ideas and earned the attention of the veterans who offered him a job at the young age of 18, making him not only the youngest creator and the one of the first Black animators at Hanna-Barbera. He was an inbetweener and layout artist at the studio. As a fan of action cartoons, so when given the chance to work on a revival of the Super Friends, he went all-in on it, not only designing the end-card to the first season, but more impressively, the end battle sequence from Challenge of the Superfriends (1978) , which has been imitated and duplicated in lots of shows over the decades.

McNeil worked at numerous studios aside from Hanna-Barbera. One of his most notable stops was at Filmation Associates, where he worked in various departments across several shows, including Freedom Force, The New Adventures of Batman, Tarzan and the Super 7 (where he animated on the Stretchman and Microwoman [pictured here] segments, the first married Black couple in animation), The Kid Super Power Hour with Shazam!, Gilligan’s Planet, Blackstar, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe,, He worked at various studios throughout the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

What did Darrell McNeil work on? The bigger question is what DIDN’T he work on. He was an animator and served various art duties on a Murderers’ Row of cartoons, including Space Stars, Pac-Man, Mister T, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Jem, My Little Pony, The Real Ghostbusters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tiny Toon Adventures, X-Men, Street Fighter, and Stripperella. And that’s just a sampler.
