Another devastating flash flood today in Nepal. The unfairness of the impacts they're facing as the climate warms is overwhelming. Per capita carbon emissions in Nepal are less than 1/20th that of the US.

"A proposal by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) to power data centres in the province will only allow natural gas-powered projects to connect to the grid" The worst petrostates on the planet are scrambling to cement AI slop as a new demand source for fossil fuels
A proposal by the Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) to power data centres in the province will only allow natural gas-powered projects to connect to the grid.

The June proposal states that gas-fired thermal generation can operate in all weather conditions, can handle high electric loads and passes the “electrical island” test, meaning it can provide stable power without grid access.

Renewables, hybrid facilities and standalone energy storage facilities are excluded because they don’t meet those requirements it says.

Definitely happening in Australia www.aemo.com.au/-/media/file... For those unfamiliar: batteries charge at low price, discharge at high, make many $ If there are fewer low and high prices, less chance to make $ IMO: would be nice if batteries were tasked with maximising fossil phase-out instead
Battery revenue
In Q2 2026, estimated revenue35 for grid-scale batteries in the NEM averaged $57.5 million, a decline of $73 million from Q2
2025 (Figure 57). This reflected lower net revenue from arbitrage, which at $52.8 million was $68.1 million (-56%) lower
than Q2 2025, driven by shrinkage in the price spreads earned by batteries across the NEM.
Frequency control ancillary services (FCAS) revenue also declined by $5.0 million (-51%) to $4.8 million this quarter. Despite
this decrease, FCAS accounted for a slightly larger share of total battery revenue, rising by 0.8 pp year-on-year to 8.3% All NEM regions experienced this decline in average
price spreads. The largest decreases were in New South
Wales and Victoria, where spreads fell by $381/MWh
(-90%) to $41/MWh and by $350/MWh (-88%) to
$50/MWh, respectively. South Australia and Queensland
also recorded substantial year-on-year declines, with
respective spreads decreasing by $232/MWh (-80%) to
$59/MWh and $211/MWh (-79%) to $57/MWh.
