Kajuji Temple, Yamashina Ward, Kyoto, Japan. Photography by Katsu
Framed by the dark timber posts and open doors of a heavy wooden temple gate (mon), a wet gravel path glistens following an autumn rain at Kajuji Temple in Kyoto's Yamashina Ward. Shallow rainwater pools mirror the brilliant red maples (momiji) that burst into fiery color along the approach, their scarlet leaves contrasting against evergreen shrubs and the mist-veiled, wooded slope of Mount Ogurayama in the distance. Overhanging grey roof tiles (kawara) form a dark upper border, while a simple bamboo railing guides the eye deeper into the mossy garden sanctuary. The scene awakens a deeply contemplative sensory environment: the gentle, crisp scent of wet earth, fallen maple leaves, and rain-soaked cedar timber, the crunch of crushed gravel shifting underfoot, the cool touch of autumn air clinging to the skin, and the soothing sound of rain dripping steadily from the curved eaves into puddles below. Founded in 900 AD by Emperor Daigo in memory of his mother, Fujiwara no Tane-ko, Kajuji (also read as Kanjuji) is an ancient temple of the Shingon sect of Esoteric Buddhism with deep imperial connections (monzeki). Located in the quiet eastern Yamashina valley of Kyoto, the temple is celebrated for its historic strolling pond garden (chisen-kaiyū-shiki teien), centered around the historic Himuro-ike pond, which in medieval times was used every winter to forecast the coming year's harvest based on the thickness of its ice.

Photography by Ayano Sudo. @ayanosudo.bsky.social
Seated on a woven zabuton before a low lacquered writing desk, a young woman pauses in quiet contemplation, her profile cast in soft daylight filtered through expansive shōji lattice windows. She wears a striking kimono adorned with bold, undulating vertical stripes of vibrant cinnabar red against ivory silk, paired with a deep vermillion obi embroidered with delicate cluster blossoms and lush green leaves. Beside her, a dark vessel holding bamboo calligraphy brushes rests upon the warm wood of the desk, while the blurred greenery of a garden shines softly through the lower window panes. The image evokes an exquisite sensory atmosphere: the smooth glide of heavy silk across tatami matting, the faint, earthy fragrance of sumi ink and rice paper, the gentle warmth of afternoon light, and the serene stillness of a solitary moment devoted to private thoughts. Created by acclaimed Japanese photographer Ayano Sudo—renowned for her cinematic explorations of identity, nostalgia, and retro portraiture—this image bridges modern fine-art photography with classic pre-war Japanese aesthetics. The vibrant, dynamic pattern of the kimono echoes the revolutionary textile art of the Taishō and early Shōwa eras, when avant-garde meisen weaves and bold resist-dyed motifs transformed daily women's fashion into expressive visual art. Sudo’s meticulous staging reflects the highest principles of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and devotion), where every element—from the tailored alignment of the textile stripes and hand-worked obi embroidery to the deliberate framing of the traditional interior—is rendered with painterly precision.

On this day in 1813, the Battle of the Thames was fought near present-day Chatham-Kent, Ontario. The battle was a defeat for the British, who lost control of the Western District of Upper Canada. Indigenous leader Tecumseh was killed in the battle. 🎨 William Emmons
A historical illustration depicting a battle scene in a wooded area. Soldiers in gray uniforms and red-coated figures are engaged in combat, with some wielding muskets and others on horseback. Several fallen figures lie on the ground, and a central figure on a white horse appears to be leading the charge. Trees with autumn foliage and a distant landscape with more troops are visible in the background.

There is also the yield trade off. Different systems produce different yields which have cascading effects on price, land use, etc. Shifts towards less toxic inputs and biodiversity are good, but we need a balance. No one size fits all.

There is a perception that people in the past had less skill or weren't as smart as people today. An object like this show how creative and smart they were. How they did so much with so little by comparison. AI & LLMs could never make this. Don't get me started on Viking & Roman colored glass.

Located in the Taihaku Ward of Sendai, Japan, Akiu Great Falls is widely celebrated as one of Japan’s most majestic waterfalls and a designated Place of Scenic Beauty.
Framed by a delicate arbor of snow-draped branches glowing with cool indigo light, Akiu Great Falls (Akiu Ōtaki) cascades through a frozen gorge in Sendai's mountainous western rim. Heavy winter frost encases every twig and bough in pristine white yukisheshō ("snow makeup"), forming a crystalline lattice over the dark basalt cliffs. Below, the churning waters of the Natori River plunge into a deep, shadowed basin, captured in a silky, luminous blur that contrasts against the static, frozen landscape. The scene evokes an intimate winter sensory atmosphere: the biting, clear mountain air of Miyagi Prefecture, the muffled roar of rushing water echoing within the snow-insulated canyon, the clean scent of frozen hemlock and wet stone, and the deep stillness that settles over the valley during a heavy snowfall.
Plummeting 55 meters into the river canyon below, the falls serve as the natural crowning jewel of the Akiu region, famous for its historic hot springs (Akiu Onsen) which have drawn visitors—including the legendary feudal warlord Date Masamune—for over fifteen centuries. This wilderness landscape embodies Sendai’s enduring identity as Mori no Miyako ("The City of Trees"), where refined culture seamlessly yields to untamed forests and rugged mountain gorges.
