An addendum on the feast of Saint Michael: In Norwegian folk-belief, this was the day when mermaids - or rather a troll lady of the sea - would let their cattle graze on land. If people saw these troll-cows grazing at dawn, the fodder would turn bad during the winter.

1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066! 960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20

Whaaa?! Someone wrote a *poem* for Southwest Review about one of my book talks/screenings of animal laboratory films! This is one of cooler things to happen to me working in academia.
The ape on the screen celebrates.
Another ape has reached the banana.
Atop three tilting wooden boxes he stretches
for it dangling on a string we’ve watched
the protoscientist set up in silence. There was no sound
on the Primate Station of Tenerife in the Canaries in 1917.
Only puzzles and food—decorously interspersed by
title cards auf Deutsch. Like the apes, perhaps,
our cinema has become a crude experiment.
In the next film, three rats model class formations.
Rat 1 assumes the role of the worker, presses
the bar that produces the pellets thousands of times
while the other rats poshly wait, then eat. Rat 1 does not
simply press the bar; he licks it, fondles it.
Perhaps he takes pleasure in providing. Can we incorporate
abjection and kink into the model? No. The spots
on the rats’ white fur look like pellets. The shit, like pellets.
Strangely, the camera angle obscures the pellets themselves.
Then, for Kinsey, the porcupines fuck. The elephants fuck.
The chinchillas fuck. The bulls fuck other bulls.
The porcupine appears to play bass guitar
midfucking. One chimp strokes off another chimp:
they knew each other as babes, and are reuniting after
fourteen years apart. Ken and Art are their names.
Elephants produce a geyser of cum, but a thicker gush of piss.
In the final clip, a pigeon with clipped wings
is conditioned to recreate the Primate Station,
stretching up to a strung-up, plastic banana. Today,
pigeons are strapped with gear and, believe it or not,
trained to control missiles with precise pecks.
Homing, destroying a home, all in a day’s work.
Every other style of living is a projection on a screen.
The vestigial wounds we’re scratching will kill us all.
Luckily the animals we’re watching are already dead.
