The retail price of U.S. diesel hit an all-time record of $6.53/gallon in the week of Sept 21, well above the 2022 peak of $5.81. It eased slightly to $6.38 on Sept 28.

Global wine consumption fell 570 million liters (−2.7%) in 2025. Italy (−210M) and the USA (−142M) led the drop, followed by Germany, China, and France (−70 to −80M each). On the bright side, Brazil added 130 million liters, then Georgia (+35M), Romania (+35M), Mexico (+30M), and Portugal (+30M).

Știrbey Winery, Romania, postcard 1913. Built c. 1910 for Prince Barbu Știrbey (1872–1946), the estate was seized by communists in 1949; the family was persecuted. In 2001, granddaughter Ileana and Baron Jakob Kripp recovered 20 hectares and, with oenologist Oliver Bauer, revived it.

Main Wine Grape Varieties in New Zealand, 1990–2026. New Zealand's vineyard area is still growing, mainly because of expanding Sauvignon Blanc plantings. Sauvignon Blanc's share has grown from 9% in 1990 to 70% today, making the country's vineyards substantially less diverse.

Monthly U.S. Wine Imports from Austria and Germany, 2001–2026. U.S. German wine imports peaked at about $12 million a month in 2008–2011 and have since fallen nearly 60%, to $5 million. Austria's rose from almost nothing to $2 million a month, now a third of Germany's, up from under a tenth in 2001.

Value of U.S. Wine Exports: 2024–2025 In 2025, U.S. wine exports fell by $428 million (−34%), driven mostly by Canada (−$343 million, −77%). Exports to China (−$69 million, −72%), the UK (−$14 million, −8%), and Panama (−$11 million, −74%) also declined notably.

Late 1980s/early 1990s commercial for Alpenweiss, a sweet Canadian white made to rival German Liebfraumilch: "The white that's always right." Made by Chateau-Gai (Niagara Falls, Ontario) from c. 1960, in white and red, until Chateau-Gai became part of Vincor International in the early 1990s.

U.S. Wine Import Values: 2025 vs. 2024 U.S. wine imports fell by $565 million (-8.3%) year-over-year, with most of the decline concentrated in Q4 2025. Italy (-$220M) and France (-$119M) accounted for the largest absolute losses.

Most recent data on U.S. wine consumption show continued decline. NABCA figures through July 2026 show wine consumption in the 11 control states — where the state runs wine wholesale and often retail — still has not turned around. July was 4.6% below July 2025, the rolling 12-month average down 4.2%

August Sander (German 1876-1964) Gypsies on the Mosel, 1931. From 1933 Sinti & Roma were registered and sterilized, interned from 1935, deported from 1940, murdered in the extermination camps from Jan 1942. These people may have been among them. Sander was Germany's foremost portraitist of the era.

France in the 1950s -- Goulet-Turpin's rolling grocery and wine store serving rural regions. Founded in Reims in 1874, it opened France's first self-service store in 1948 and first supermarket in 1958. By 1970 it had 1,000 grocery stores, 10 supermarkets and 5 hypermarkets, but closed a decade later

Who gained from Canada's ban on U.S. wine? Canada's wine imports from the U.S. fell from US$431m in 2024 to US$100m in 2025 (-US$331m). France (+US$68m) and Italy (+US$31m) gained most, then Australia, Chile and New Zealand. But total imports still fell 7% — 44% of the U.S. shortfall went unreplaced

Prosecco Gummies may carry the PDO name only when the wine genuinely defines their taste. Given the ingredients — glucose syrup, sugar, water, pork gelatin, citric acid, flavoring (prosecco), juice concentrate, black carrot, and carnauba wax — that is unlikely. Nor is alcohol-free Prosecco legal.

We associate Bordeaux with red wine. But 60 years ago approx 58% of the vinifera vineyard area was white! Sémillon was the most widely planted variety, followed by Merlot, Malbec (!) and the Cabernets (Franc & Sauv together). Also, Hybrids accounted for 25% of Bordeaux vines.
