Not to take away from celebrating Carson, but she's a "former professor" here in large part because the university shut down her department and cancelled its classes. What pride does the institution claim now—years later—when austerity is forcing other scholars out? What does that 'pride' do?

A writer from 1874 complaining about how bad the 1866 catalogue of Bucharest's Botanical Garden is. I really want to read it now, but not sure it survives. (Mangiuca, in "Familia").
Tóte aceste lucrări botanice sunt fórte manche si defectuóse, că-ci autorii acestor colectiuni, tratate si opuri, nu au descălecat la poporulu nostru romanescu spre a-lu consultá despre botanic’a romana, ci mai vertosu s’au mărginitu intru a traduce pe romaniá numirile planteloru din limb’a greca, romana si germana ori simplu a primi numirile din aceste limbi (Catalogue of the plants in the botanical garden of the Bucharest medical school, 1866. All these botanical works are very scanty and defective, because the authors of these collections, treatises, and works did not turn to our Romanian people in order to consult them about Romanian botany. Rather, they confined themselves to translating the names of plants into Romanian from Greek, Roman [i.e. Latin], and German, or simply to adopting the names from those languages.)In astfel de procedura spre a batjocori botanic’a romana mai vertosu esceléza susu citatulu catalogu a’lu planteloru gradinei botanice din Bucuresci din anulu 1866, si acest’a sè fiă disu spre rusînea Romaniei.

Historians rightly say people's actions should be judged by the standards of their time. But what often gets lost is that those standards weren't what we think. Many 18thc Europeans hated colonialism--as an e.g., here's Immanuel Kant in 1795 castigating it as "truly appalling." It was contentious...
"Excerpt from Kant: "If one compares this with the inhospitable conduct of the civilized—and primarily commercial—states of our own continent, the injustice they display when visiting foreign lands and peoples (which they equate with conquering them) is truly appalling. To them, upon their discovery, America, the lands of the Negroes, the Spice Islands, the Cape, and so forth, were territories belonging to no one; for they counted the inhabitants as nothing. In the East Indies (Hindustan), under the pretext of merely establishing trading posts, they introduced foreign military forces—bringing with them the oppression of the natives, the incitement of the region's various states into widespread wars, famine, insurrection, treachery, and the whole litany of evils that afflict the human race.

China and Japan (Nippon)—having had experience with such guests—wisely restricted access: the former permitted entry but not full admission, while the latter granted even that limited access to only a single European nation, the Dutch, whom they nonetheless kept isolated from the native population, much like prisoners."
