I think you're misunderstanding what happened. Anthropic researchers performed a sandboxed experiment on open-weight models (not their own models!) to see if they could self-replicate on IoT devices. There was no harm or damage. All of this took place in a virtual private cloud.

Anthropic was clear in their statement that the experiment was sandboxed: "To do this, we built a firewalled VPC of 8 GCP nodes running redroid, an Android 15 emulator. Patient zero (gray node) is seeded with the worm." So what exactly is the issue?

I'm not sure why you think this matters. Anthropic researches focused this testing on the replication capabilities of some open weight models, not the hacking capabilities, which already have been demonstrated. So they deliberately removed some of the barriers to hacking (e.g., left ADB ports open).

The part that struck me was their insistence that they know the kids at the UT game "aren't assimilated" because despite being at a football game and having the same shitty fashion sense and the same goofy hand gestures as white fans, they still look Indian. Gives the game away.

Last month, @gillianbrockell.com reported that not only does ICE abuse immigrants by shackling them for hours on end, they also torment them with mockery and denying bathroom breaks.

Then a man from Eritrea or Somalia, Barry isn’t sure which, began to beg the guards to let him use the lavatory. Barry chimed in with an appeal to decency, telling the guards, “Please consider us as human beings.” But the guards were boisterous by that point, he said, and they didn’t appreciate the man’s increasingly loud and desperate pleas crashing their party.

Barry watched as a guard turned and looked at the man dead in the face and said, “You. Can pee on. You.” Another guard laughed.

“After seeing that, I just kept my head down,” Barry, 52, told me over the phone last week.

I agree this is one reason he likes them, but I don't think it's correct to say it's the whole attraction, because that wouldn't explain why he was so vocal about mercantilism back in the 1980s. I think he really does believe, stupidly, it's good economic theory, and the power trip is a bonus.

No. There was initially some concern that openAI's new model could have included in its training data some unpublished work of two mathematicians who were working on a similar problem, but that has since been deemed very unlikely. That unpublished work proved a lesser result anyway.

This section sounds pretty egregious, but Bubeck's response on Twitter does add some ... honestly unsurprising context. x.com/SebastienBub... But I still think I'll stick to my current choice of avoiding all OpenAI products for the foreseeable future.

Two proposals were offered to me. The first was that we post our Euler result, and that OpenAI post its Navier-Stokes result the next day. The second was that, after posting Euler, I alone write a paper presenting the Navier-Stokes result, acknowledging that an internal OpenAI model had resolved it. Sebastien twice asserted that he wanted Levent removed from authorship, and said it would all be simple if only it were not the case that, and it was so annoying that, Levent works at Anthropic. It was also said that if OpenAI posted after us, they would say that we deserved the Clay Prize, and that we were the “closest humans to the problem”. I declined both offers.

I said that if OpenAI released its result in the way proposed I would go public with what happened. The reply was, “Why would you ruin your career?” I replied that I am an academic, and asked why he thought going public would ruin my career. The reply was, “If you don’t want me to be nice, then I don’t have to be nice.”

To underscore why this is especially awful for those who may not know, the measles vaccine is usually given at 12 months. Newborns rely on community immunity to prevent exposure, which until recently we have had in the US. This quite literally could be anyone's newborn. None of this had to happen.
