Put another way, Ford wants to spend more on removing bike lanes in Toronto ($48M) than he's spent protecting all of Ontario's businesses from an international trade war. Ontario deserves serious leadership, that follows through on promises, and actually puts people before profits.

"Road Cost Recovery Trends" (vtpi.org/rcrt.pdf) This short study calculates the portion of US roadway expenditures paid by fuel taxes and tolls. Most local road costs and a growing portion highway costs are funded by general taxes; user fees now cover less than half of road spending.
Although user fees once funded most highway expenses, local roadway spending, which represent about 27% of total road costs, are primarily funded by general taxes, and during the last six decades total inflation-adjusted roadway spending increased much more than user revenues so, user fees now finance less than half of total road spending. (https://vtpi.org/rcrt.pdf)Per vehicle roadway expenditures and user revenues declined, while annual subsidies increased from less than $400 in the 1970s to more than $500 now. (www.vtpi.org/rcrt.pdf)Between 1960 and 2023 roadway spending per vehicle-mile declined 43% and user revenues 63%. (www.vtpi.org/rcrt.pdf)

Why are they all like this? Nearly 90% globally and over 80% of Canadians want stronger political action on climate and nearly half of Canadians would contribute 1% of their income to make it happen. Why are our leaders cowards? www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Part of the abstract of the paper "Globally representative evidence on the actual and perceived support for climate action" by Peter Andre, Teodora Boneva, Felix Chopra & Armin Falk.

"Mitigating climate change necessitates global cooperation, yet global data on individuals’ willingness to act remain scarce. In this study, we conducted a representative survey across 125 countries, interviewing nearly 130,000 individuals. Our findings reveal widespread support for climate action. Notably, 69% of the global population expresses a willingness to contribute 1% of their personal income, 86% endorse pro-climate social norms and 89% demand intensified political action. Countries facing heightened vulnerability to climate change show a particularly high willingness to contribute."Figure 1 from the paper showing survey results on a map. Globally there is overwhelming support for climate action even to the point of spending personal money.
