Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel – awarded the 2026 medicine prize – discovered a remarkable protein, channelrhodopsin, in a single-celled alga. Hegemann wondered how Chlamydomonas, a single-celled alga, is able to swim towards a light source.

Time to call it what it is: separatists are promising to work with Trump and betray the rest of us.
Separatists have been coy about how they’d work with Trump to dismantle Canada. Now they’re facing tough questions, and so they should.

And this, ladies and gentlemen, is how a foreign government's energy policy can have major consequences for a U.S. election without firing a shot or casting a single ballot. Whether intentional or not, Beijing's decision just made Trump's fuel-price problem even harder to solve.

Double jeopardy grant review is a thing. On re-review of a grant at CIHR the success rate goes up when you have more reviewers re-reviewing the sequential resubmission. It rises to 59% success rate if all 3 reviewers re-review a grant vs 21% with no common reviewers. Let that sink in … 🤔

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see Sarah, the protagonist, next to a stick figure labeled “AI”. The stick figure says, “my outputs look just like yours now.”
The second panel zooms in on Sarah’s face. Above her we see text reading “I think”.
The third panel zooms in closer on Sarah’s face. Text above her reads “you missed”.
The fourth panel shows Sarah drawing happily in a sunlit room. The text above her reads “the point”.

Been reading biomedical study proposals. It is remarkable how much old-fashioned concepts such as study design, sample size, biostats, "is there a plausible path from the data we'll obtain to the question we state?", have given way to "we'll collect multiomics and AI will figure something out"

Canada doesn't even make it onto this graph. In 2022 (last year in this dataset), their gross expenditure on R&D was 4% of the United States ncses.nsf.gov/pubs/nsb2025...
A plot of gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) by country or region. The United States is the largest, China second, the combined EU-27 in a distant third, and then a big dropoff to everybody else.
