interesting that conservatives were militantly “we must reward hustle” when the target was affirmative action at elite universities and now, when faced with the success of south asians and other groups, it is “i think we are too meritocratic”

one of the ways the media shows which side they prefer, is which politicians they quote uncharitably out-of-context and which they clean up for even when what they actually say and do is offensive (the Biden story ran on the front page less than a week before the 24 election)

Absent major institutional reforms that turn us into a multiparty democracy, totally transform SCOTUS, & significantly rein in the imperial presidency, this is the <best case> scenario of what is going to happen. Other, more permanent authoritarian scenarios are also possible.

What everyone has to prepare for is the constitutional crisis to accelerate if the Democrats take the House and the Senate. Vought has been allowed by the Republicans to act with impunity, so have he will continue to ignore Congress. This is why you have to impeach him immediately.

When I worked at the White House, we constantly had to correct the speeches and memos that started with "The cost of college is rapidly rising." It's one of those zombie ideas that is hard to kill. College can be expensive, and moreso than it was for our parents, but let's get the facts right.

this is why i’m not interested in “Bibi told Trump to do this war so it’s Bibi’s fault.” Bibi had told every president since Clinton to bomb Iran. It’s the President’s job to know when a foreign leader is being a bloodthirsty idiot and NOT LISTEN TO THAT GUY. This war is because of Trump.

This point, from my recent interview with @perrybaconjr.bsky.social for TNR, is so crucial. Trans people are desperate for relief from the relentless Republican attacks impacting all of us. When Democrats move right, they signal relief may not be coming, and that engenders a lot of despair.
And so for Democrats to say, They have a point on some of this, it is engendering a lot of hopelessness and a lot of fear in the trans community, because we have been just trying to hold on, hoping that this time would end and we would be able to get back to where we were five years, six years ago. And what Democrats are signaling is, like, No, we’re going to keep things as they are, and maybe even make them worse.

It's basically division by zero. They just come up with two numbers off think air and multiply them and justify their galaxy brained ideas, but because it's formally a (garbage-in garbage-out) Bayesian computation they think it's impeachable logic. Suffice to say it's not serious Bayesian practice

Long time fan. I want to clarify bc this is something I do for a living that the math is actually not complicated, and their arguments exhibit a common failure mode of probabilistic risk assessment: if you're multiplying a very big cost times a very small probability, is the number big or small?

Their attitudes are so obnoxious. So they're either too blinkered to see what's happening and so have to be stopped, or too full of shit to do anything about it and so they have to be stopped. They love having it both ways and as a society I think we need to stop letting them get away with it

The thing is that it's self-reinforcing. The labs (mostly OAI, really) engages in irresponsible behavior partly because they think it gives them good copy. One more reason why they should be fully stopped
