I’m VERY slowly settling in here. Maybe I’ll hang up my hat and stay for a bit OR maybe I won’t, but for now please know that I’m going to be all over the place topically. Buckle up! (Clifford Brown in the pfp)

Senate had one job: ban Congress from trading stocks. Got 53, needed 60 — killed by a voter-ID rider Schumer himself called a "poison pill." Now the same people who sank it run ads calling opponents "prolific traders." ~40 members have blown disclosure deadlines since summer.

We need to rephrase the whole discussion in terms of hazardous products, instead of "minds". And then we need to make sure that there's liability. A model hacks someone? Put a C-suite guy in jail. A model produces sexual harassment material? Put a C-suite guy in jail. Watch how fast things get safe

This exchange actually is the best example of everything we were discussing. going to use it to teach. Not just the lack of cultural competency but the contempt for the idea of culture as a competency. It’s perfect.

As I stated months ago, Palantir's software is a piece of junk. If you're modeling data about the real world into an ontology, and your ontology does not feature bitemporal modeling — a very basic technique for "when was the observation recorded and for what dates did it hold", your ontology sucks.

I've been Black long enough to have at least some built-in 'yup, people be racist, and yet we move' defense systems But ngl shit can still sometimes be...jarring! Like seeing this, openly and shamelessly, and knowing Gorsuch had him in his chambers, and that he helps pick federal judges. Sickening!

This is why I find so enervating the old centrist two-step; “Republicans are an existential threat to our democracy, and we will work together with them to find bipartisan solutions—as the voters desire” the fuck we do. We desire consequences and repercussions. We desire investigations and trials.

I have begun to suspect that Dolly Parton may be one of them.

Joseph Heller and Enough

I came across this lovely anecdote from a book by late Vanguard founder John Bogle. This was an exchange Bogle witnessed at a party given by a billionaire on Shelter Island in New York.

The late novelist Kurt Vonnegut informed his pal, Joseph Heller, that their host, a hedge fund manager, had made more money in a single day than Heller had earned from his wildly popular novel Catch-22 over its whole history.

Heller responded – “Yes, but I have something he will never have . . . enough.”

Fittingly, John Bogle titled his book “Enough.”

One of the most interesting passages in the minutes for the Fed's June meeting: Only a few participants thought rates were restrictive—and slightly restrictive, at that. The minutes framed the committee's divide as over outlook uncertainty, not the usual disagreement over tactics.
