While many drivers are careful and considerate, I see a huge amount of dangerous and aggressive driving on London's roads - and very little enforcement. Drivers aren't worse than other road users. But motor vehicles do far more damage than other machines when poorly controlled or recklessly driven.

I see a lot of people complaining about the undoubtedly stressful conditions at present on London's roads. But I see few people complaining about motor vehicles. Yet in the last 24 hours three vulnerable road users have died after being hit by people driving motor vehicles.

Virtually every time I try to cross busy main road, this happens. Far more dangerous & less accessible than a bus stop with a cycle track, & happening everywhere. Yet no moral panic & media hysteria.
Car stopped on crossing when green man is showing for pedestrians- usually they will move off as soon as there is space even when crossing still in pedestrian phase. Calling all London cyclists! Kensington High St consultation closes this weekend. Please respond and ask for a fully segregated cycle lane. Current proposals are welcome but mostly superficial and include nothing for cyclists: consult.rbkc.gov.uk/communities/...

Unfortunately, all this will do is probably scare Sadiq (or his successor) away from doing Road User Charging, which is the next inevitable step to reduce congestion.

TfL put in zebra crossings which are *motoring* infrastructure to try and ameliorate the concerns of folks who find crossing cycle tracks harder and have now actually created a problem for human-scale interaction at one of the busiest cycle tracks in the UK.

The reason why so many 'cycling campaigners' are up in arms about the latest attacks on cycling & floating bus stops are simple... 1. Now do cars. Seriously, if you want to discuss road danger, making a more inclusive environment for pedestrians, then I've got some side roads & zebras to point at...

Westminster Council Conservatives, of 'vertical drinking' fame, earlier this year proudly cancelled a cycle lane on Hamilton Terrace. Where on a Thursday afternoon last June a 13 year old boy was hit and seriously injured by the driver of a car. They have received no negative press for doing so.
Screenshot of a newsletter from Paul Swaddle Leader of the Conservative Group and Westminster Council which read:

We are wasting no time. One of our first acts has been to halt any more work on the C51 Cycleway scheme on Hamilton Terrace in St John's Wood. Over 1,000 residents backed the local campaign against it, raising serious concerns about safety, the loss of parking and electric charging points, and the enormous cost of ripping up the road. We listened then. We are acting now. This is what Real Action looks like from day one. We will always listen. Tell me what matters most to you below:
Screenshot of TfL road danger reduction dashboard summary of collision which reads:

On 12/06/2025 there was a moderately serious collision at 15:15 at On Hamilton Terrace, Near The Junction With Abercorn Place.. The collision took place on an unclassified road. The collision involved a pedal cycle and a car, resulting in 1 moderately seriously injured cyclist.

During Lilian Greenwood's tenure, the government unveiled a Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy, and issued councils guidance to make cycling safer for women and girls. However she was also criticised in some quarters for her support for driverless car pilots in London. road.cc/news/cycling...

Here's an idea for @andyburnham.bsky.social. Run on a platform to spend a few less billion on transport projects with entirely negative return on investment, and a few more billion on active travel projects which return between £5 and £19 for every £1 spent.

This is just one reason why the @londonassembly.bsky.social transport committee is starting an investigation into autonomous passenger vehicles, their regulation and impact on London’s transport system. More vehicle miles driven, so less space for walking cycling or bus priority?

Indicative of #CityOfLondon 's retreat to pro-motoring policies ... those who shout loudest now get what they want. (Missed over the winter: right-leaning Aldermen and taxi drivers wanted Old Jewry re-opened to traffic, officers trialled with ETO, consultation "50% identified as taxi drivers")
• 127 people responded to the public consultation. Of these:
o 50% identified as taxi drivers
o 29% as taxi passengers
o 37% as pedestrians
o 24% as cyclists
• Of the four business directly affected on Old Jewry, two felt the impact of
the experiment was a Major Positive, one felt it was a Major Negative and
one Moderate Negative.
• Overall, 67% of respondents favoured making the ETO permanent (i.e.
keeping it open)
• Direct engagement took place with the Mercers Company Property
Director in advance of the ETO. In advance of the ETO commencing the
Mercers Company preference was to keep Old Jewry closed and they did
not formally respond to the ETO consultation.Resolved:
That, having reviewed the Sub-Committee’s previous decision to end the
Experimental Traffic Order (ETO) on Old Jewry, Members agreed that it should
be rescinded and alternative action taken, as set out below:
• That the Experimental Traffic Order (ETO) be made permanent,
retaining the arrangements whereby Old Jewry remains open
southbound for motorised traffic and two-way for people cycling. This is
in accordance with the action proposed in Option 1 of the report to the
Sub-Committee on 16 September 2025

If Labour had promised to spend £2.5 billion on public and active transport - which would disproportionately support poor and disabled people, and would be a long term investment rather than a short term sop - everyone would be demanding to know where the £2.5 billion is going to come from.
