My car tried to kill me today when something electrical failed and the steering locked up. Fortunately, a moment beforehand, on a whim, I’d pulled into the parking lot of a garden centre. I’m taking this as validation of all my life choices. Bought myself a nice Protea to steady my nerves.

Someone is about to run a herd of cows down the road in front of our house. So we have been informed by the nice gent who parked his car across our driveway to prevent the cows detouring to nosh on our garden. (Yes, of course I’m waiting at the fence to snap a pic; so are all the neighbours.)

So delighted to get to publish some compelling detective fiction at Reckoning! CHINATOWN is a great movie I often quote as an example of environmental justice storytelling, but I think we've published only one other mystery, "The Blackthorn Door" by @fordwalker.bsky.social

Seeing as I’m here for my bi-monthly (that’s once every two months, folks) bullshit drop: I’ve just been given an ancient cast iron fireplace grate. Very exciting. Unsure if vintage or actual antique but I legitimately cannot lift the thing. I love a Good Object. I wish Objects were still Good.

Been noodling around with gouache in my sketchbook (guess where I ran out of masking tape). It’s nice to do something creative with zero professional or financial pressure involved. Nice to loosen my grip on The Outcome. Nice to fuck about and find out in the best way possible.

I think one of the upsetting things about the AI art discourse is that it has revealed (all over again) how many people in the world are genuinely angry and resentful that some artists get paid for a living.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a chimpanzee in an enclosure is sitting on the ground and painting abstract streaks of color on a canvas lying in the grass. Panel 2: a couple is standing outside the enclosure, looking in. The girl says about the painting chimpanzee, “aww, that’s cute.” Panel 3: the chimpanzee is alone in his dimly lit studio, head in hands, holding a lit cigarette. He looks completely dejected, feeling misunderstood. There is a pair of glasses, a glass of whisky, crumpled paper, and an unfinished painting laid out on the desk in front of him. The walls and floor space of his studio are covered in his abstract paintings on canvases and paper. There is also a marble sculpture of a banana beside him.

Day 7 in our 120-year-old house. The tap water has shaken off its mysterious rusty tint. We’ve issued an eviction notice to the possum in the roof. The old carpets have been banished; some of the worst wallpaper is soon to follow. My books wait patiently in the barn for their new accommodations.

Cory Doctorow is great. From pluralistic.net/2026/01/13/n...
I'm sorry. As a technology writer, I'm supposed to be telling you that this bet will some day pay off, because one day we will have shoveled so many words into the word-guessing program that it wakes up and learns how to actually do the jobs it is failing spectacularly at today. This is a proposition akin to the idea that if we keep breeding horses to run faster and faster, one of them will give birth to a locomotive. Humans possess intelligence, and machines do not. The difference between a human and a word-guessing program isn't how many words the human knows.

I'm sorry. I know that when we talk about "digital sovereignty," we're obliged to talk about how we can build more data-centres that we can fill up with money-losing chips from American silicon monopolists in the hopes of destroying as many jobs as possible while blowing through our clean energy goals and enshittifying as much of our potable water as possible.

I don't have any advice for how to do that. I'm sorry!
