Today is Truth and Reconciliation Day, aka Orange Shirt Day. It's a paid holiday for bankers & politicians. Indigenous people don't get the day off. I don't go to Orange Shirt Day marches anymore because the local one flies the Canada flag, has huge numbers of cops, & the cops get thanked first.

I fully expect my colleagues to continue to mistakes, both in what they reject and what they accept. Editors need to stop making private and public callouts or statements about authors. That just makes any mistakes far worse, puts themselves in legal jeopardy, and amplifies fear. No one needs that.

A detector should NEVER be the final arbiter. It shouldn't be more than a never-deleting spam filter in the process. The editor still needs to review all of those submissions because, like a spam filter, it will never be perfect. This is not a responsibility that can be delegated to an algorithm.

My kid's school newsletter this week has not one but two exhortations to my fellow suburban parents to use other means besides their gas guzzling armored tanks (1. the bus 2. bikes) to get their kids to school! I am directly responsible for one of them! Guess you can thank Trump for the other
Blanche Sims
Bike-to-School II!
October 2, 2026

What: Join your fellow bike enthusiasts for a group ride to Blanche Sims Elementary!

When: We’ll meet starting around 7:30AM, and the ride will begin at 7:45AM, hopefully getting everybody to school in time for the doors to open at 8:10AM.

Where: We’ll meet at the Elizabeth Street School parking lot, 330 N. Lapeer Street in Lake Orion village. We encourage you to bike there, but if you need to drive, please use street parking or the LOCS Admin building parking lot off Church St. The route will follow Elizabeth Street to North Washington to Jackson to Florence Street, an easy 0.6 miles, mostly downhill, ending at the bike rack by the Blanche Sims bus dropoff. Principal Nuss has given us permission to ride in the bus lane! LOPD will be on the scene for safety. Adult chaperones will ride in front and bring up the rear. Bring helmets and bright-colored clothing for visibility; we’ll have a limited amount of safety gear for folks to borrow. All forms of non-motorized transportation are welcome!
Why:

• Results from the largest study ever conducted of cycling, wheeling and walking, released in March 2026, show that “cycling and walking significantly reduces mortality, lowers the risk of injury and helps with depression. . . . And that’s before you even factor in the positive effect on air quality.”
https://www.cyclingweekly.com/news/everyone-gains-when-more-people-cycle-study-shows-bike-commuting-has-a-billion-benefits-literally

• According to the Safe Routes Partnership, a national nonprofit that advocates for safe walking and biking to and from schools, kids who bike to school are fitter, have better cholesterol, better glucose metabolism, a lower composite cardiovascular risk score, a lower body mass index, and lower odds of becoming obese compared to kids who are driven.
https://saferoutespartnership.org/resource/bike-train-toolkit

• “In 1969, more than 40 percent of kids in the US between the ages of five and fourteen walked or biked to school. Today, it’s around 11 percent.”
- Life After Cars, by Sarah Goodyear, Doug Gordon and Aaron Naparstek, Penguin Random House 2025.

• The number of Blanche Sims students who walked or biked to school in 2025 was less than 3 percent! Let’s turn that trend around!

Title: The Mishipeshu and The Great Lakes Biome

Description: an illustration showing Lake Michigan and its surrounding geography in curved perspective. Noted in small cursive around the geography are labels denoting the Native American territories belonging to each area. Dotted white lines crisscross the illustration showing the paths of ley lines or other mysterious navigations. Over all of this is a phantom depiction of the Mishipeshu; the Underwater Panther of Objiwe legend. The Mishipeshu's paw dips beneath the waters of Lake Michigan, demonstrating its scale. The Mishipeshu is depicted as a panther with elongated ears and covered in a mixture of feathers and fur. Spines curve along its back and down its tail terminating in curved barbs.

Whereas many West Coast salmon runs collapsed within the span of human memory, New England's rivers have been plugged for so long that few residents know that they once ran silver with bluebacks, alewives, and shad. "It's a challenge to talk to people about these fish, because they don't have any cultural memory," Furey said. Fish
depletion, alas, is often a self-reinforcing cycle. The fewer fish there are, the less the public cares about them, a feedback loop the biologists John Waldman and Karin Limburg dubbed eco-
social anomie.

Imagine this kind of plenty coursing through an eastern landscape. we can’t even conceive of it.
Over the past four centuries, scientists have calculated that New England's dams have deprived its ecosystems of more than 9 million metric tons (20 billion pounds) of alewives-roughly the weight of
300,000 humpback whales.
