That sounds more like a poll that is testing the effectiveness of various campaign messages — sometimes candidates test the effectiveness of their own potential messaging, sometimes that of their opponents

It’s funny because he sucks so bad at all of this that he clearly starts out trying to say “we are doing this so that they *won’t* take out Los Angeles,” but halfway through saying it, since his brain is mush, it turns into “fuck Los Angeles.”

It's good to point out these sorts of lame intimidation efforts. But it's also important to put the ineffectiveness in context. If the goal is to promote voting, flagging the structural limitations of federal threats should be part of that process.

Look, this is bad. Yes. But the Trump admin sent six (6) people to Maricopa and Pima. Where, by my count, there are 404 polling places, spread across 18,000 square miles (each county is ~9k sq mi). What they want is the FEAR to discourage the voting they can't actually prevent.

Based on Cook toss-ups, the range for Dems in the Senate goes from 47 to 54. (Four other seats are lean or likely D; two, Nebraska and South Carolina, are likely R.) As of now I'd be pretty surprised if the Dems don't reach 49.

Here in Texas, Republicans basically aren't even bothering with Spanish-language ads. This sends a negative competence signal to many Latino voters, who are generally English fluent but get the message that Republicans don't care about them. www.texastribune.org/2026/10/02/t...

Lafayette Park and the Ellipse exist as public parks because the nation's early leaders deemed it unnecessary and unseemly to fence off palatial grounds in the people's capital. "Trump's plan" is an insult to the nation's people and ideals.

Lots of people are trying to square the circle by saying dems outperform in midterm years and republicans outperform in presidential years when trump is on the ballot, and I ask you to consider that Trump has simply lost the juice entirely.

In general, we Dems and left leaners more broadly tend toward sad sack-ism, like “I will not allow myself to hope because one time I hoped and it didn’t happen and it made me sad.” I don’t say this unkindly but please shut the fuck up.

I get the worry that no matter how well Dems do, the media will paint it as a disappointment, and as a counterweight to that worry I suggest we all have some self respect and fight like hell and celebrate the wins where they come rather than letting someone else tell us what we’re allowed to do.

Morello has some great music and he's on the right side of most if not all issues, and yes he's correct that being a California voter makes his individual vote less important. The problem is that he's a dude with a huge platform and he's advocating AGAINST doing the one thing that can stop Trump.

I’m optimistic we may see that start to change in New Jersey, where we recently raised Assemblymember salaries from $49,000 per year (which in NJ is a genuine pittance) to $82,000 — roughly equal to the average NJ public school teacher salary.

So not only not is running for congress unaffordable for most people, so is holding the kind of lower level elected offices that help prepare someone to be effective in congress and build a constituency

What’s worse is that most states underpay their legislators so severely that you basically have to be independently wealthy or have the kind of job where you can take off weeks at a time while still making a good salary to hold state office.

This is why every boomer-ass “don’t pay them until they make a deal” proposal pisses me off so much. Like yeah, cool, make it *even more* so that only the independently wealthy can afford to be in congress. Excellent idea.

*Long* way to go before we can expect TX to be competitive in a national close election. But if it does happen, it would be a major step towards having more big cities in presidential swing states. Once upon a time it was common; now it's rare.

Delaying the seating of a special election winner in the middle of a congressional term is a little different because the Constitution establishes the date that one congress ends and a new one begins.

NEW: The 2026 elections in most states will decide which party runs elections heading into 2028 (see map). We detail how Democrats could hold or gain this power in 14 potentially competitive states—and form a bulwark against MAGA subverting the 2028 elections www.the-downballot.com/p/voters-can...
Map of the United States titled "2026 Elections That Will Decide Which Party Runs Elections," with the subtitle "Includes secretaries of state and other elected offices where relevant." Source: The Downballot. States are colored by incumbent party.

Democratic (blue), 14 states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Republican (red), 18 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.

Bipartisan (yellow), 4 states: Hawaii, Illinois, New York, and Wisconsin.
Not up in 2026 (gray), 14 states: Delaware, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

Footnotes: Illinois and Wisconsin have Democratic secretaries of state who do not run elections. Pennsylvania's Democratic governor appointed a Republican who typically aligns with Democrats.
