In case people are not fully across the Fairford story: What appears to have happened is that five men from London went to a small country village in the middle of the night to siphon fuel for resale. In small country villages, people notice things, especially at 1am. A farmer called the police.

This country used to know how to deal with fascists interfering with the peaceful operation of Dover...
Photograph of British servicemen in full panto drag, manning (or possibly daming) a naval gun overlooking the Channel. I'm pretty sure this was taken for propaganda purposes rather than a genuinely spontaneous event - the idea that normal, sometimes silly, life was going on despite (and *to spite*) the Nazis was an important message on the home front.

When Niels Bohr fled Nazi-occupied Denmark in a fishing boat to Sweden, and then in a high-altitude plane to England, he clutched what he thought was a precious vial of heavy water used to moderate nuclear reactions. In his haste, however, he had brought a bottle of beer instead! #Bohr #physics

Overnight, a masked bandit broke into our kitchen. Armed with opposable thumbs, he proceeded to sample everything on offer. I’d just visited the farmers market, so the menu was extensive. I can now share a highly specific peer-reviewed list of what this particular raider did & did not enjoy. 🧵

Call me a historian who lives in Clacton, or whatever, but I'd like everyone to stop talking about Nigel Farage and instead focus on THE GREAT 1700S CLACTON 7ft 4 SMUGGLER CEMETERY GIANT 🙏🏻
Photo of a text caption from the Clacton Museum in Clacton West Library, describing John Bantoft a 7ft 4 man who lived behind Clacton Post Office in the 1700s and was known to smuggle silk, tea and tobacco and hide them in the cemetery. After he died in 1807, three villagers were arrested for damaging gravestones, probably because they were looking for his last load of goods. Great story!! Courtesy of Clacton Local History Society.

It’s the 81st anniversary of a German U-boat being sunk by a turd. Possibly. It sounds too good to be true, not least because the incident with the poo payload was the work of the captain, the almost perfectly named Karl-Adolf Schlitt, and the vessel was on its first patrol at the time... 🧵
